Team TR Folding Support Group: Foldaholics Anon

Thu May 30, 2002 3:12 pm

Hi, my name is JohhnyQ and I'm a Foldaholic...

I find myself checking my team ranking four or five times a day... and recently I've started "competing" against the other members in our team... anyone who's nick I recognise anyway..

I'm 94th in our team and have just gone past MadManOriginal for the 1st time (after much struggle)... in view of this I would like to say:

MadMan: I 0wN j00z!!!

:)

I used to check all the time but after hitting #2 I slowed down to about once a day. Of course Dr. Evil is about to hand me my head (again) and knock me down to #3 (damn these slow Intel CPUs ;)). Kuhtarl better watch out too, the good doctor has the highest week total right now....

In other news we'll be past Team Alberta in about a day and OcUK in about a week. We'll hit #10 yet!

I haven't had anything going since I graduated a few weeks ago...but I'm gonna try to get back started up at the workplace. Though the proxy here makes it difficult, added to the fact that they're changing the proxy and going to DHCP...ah, confusion.

The 3.0 beta can be configured to use port 80, that may get around your firewall problem.

I check at least one a day, and I have been secretly competing against other members. When I first started I was flying past people daily. But now I have had a loose grip on #19 and may have to bring some more hardware online to sneak into the top 10. :o

HI, I'm DiMaestro, and I am a foldaholic.

I find myself checking my stats, and my systems running F@H regularly, before work and after work generally. I check our stats multiple times per day, and have been trying to think of a way to get our work systems online so I can run F@H on them. :)

You have reached one of the earlier stages of foldaholicism (try pronouncing that a few times). You haven't caught the 'rabid' stage, until you are always trying to find ways to get more computers to fold with!

My name is Kuhtarl and I'm probably the BIGGEST foldaholic (standings-wise anyway... for now).

When DiMaestro got me started with folding, I started with 2 machines and laid awake all night planning my 'folding strategy'.

After getting folding permission from our Board of Commissioners, I started adding machines based on processor and RAM levels. Of course all the P4's were brought into the 'fold' immediately followed by the PIII's.

Since Steel and Damage are constantly snapping at my heels for first place, I've been adding folding to 300 mhz celerons and PII's just to edge my week production up ever higher.

The last time I checked I still have 10 more processors than Steel, but he just won't give up.

ARGH!!!!!

I even hooked up all of our idle laptops and have them running 24/7.

My office is about 20 degrees hotter than usual due to the excessive amount of folding going on.

All this to compete with people I don't even know.

This reminds me of a Simpson's episode where Homer said to Marge:
"But Marge! I have to impress these guys that I just met"

Oh well...

Fold On, my online brethren.

Well, the reason you passed me only recently is due to my new addiction: a MMOG called Myth of Soma. Now I know why Everquest was known as Evercrack. Anyway, this game does not get along well with folding and also uses 100% of the CPU anyway. So, a fair amount of time that used to be spent crunching has been spent playing this game instead :) But be afraid, because I shall soon surpass you again :)

MadManOriginal: ...and so you have. *Damn* (/me kicks self repeatedly and murmurs something about selling a kidney to buy a duallie)

actually, <excuse> i'm having trouble sending WUs, i've got 5 queued on two different machines :P with more piling up, but they just don't seem to want to send. (sometimes, after much begging and grovelling, one will reluctantly slouch over to the FAH server) anyway, maybe the new 3.0 client will fix things... </excuse>

Johnny, ATM you are ahead of me by .1 unit. :) LET THE WAR BEGIN!! lol

I am also using only one computer to fold currently. I just run it as much as possible lol. When I get another one running though, watch out :)

JohnnyQ... Life with one kidney ain't so bad. Unfortunately I GAVE one of mine away rather than sell it. Though bad for the pocketbook, it's good for Karma so I guess I'm ok.

I'm currently folding on 31 processors. I have 8-10 processors in reserve if Steel starts closing on my lead. I'd start folding on them now, but that means I'd have to get up from my desk, leave my office and go install it.

I'd rather eat Gerbil Chow and play on my wheel for a while.

Steel is a serious competitor (not to mention Dr Evil and Damage). I'm constantly watching my back.

Oh the stresses of folding.... :)

Unfortunately the 1700+ does not run folding 24/7. It gives you a fighting chance :) We are still really close on the stats page.

People, you will never overcome your problems until you state the seriousness of the addiction...

Show us the specs of the folding farms...

You think I'm getting a duallie to do CAD work faster?

I'm doing it so I can submit workunits before they time out :-),

Ok, here' s mine.

Athlon Classic 1 GHZ. GUI Folding - May change, sometimes it hogs up to 60 megs of ram.
Abit BP6 - 2 Celeron 300's at 450 Mhz. Non stop Consoles, never down.
Compaq Presario 1700t Laptop - 500 Mhz Cele2 100 Mhz FSB, once again, runs nonstop ( and boy is that puppy HOT! ).

Basically if I close the door to my room, and shut the air off, the Ambient temp will rise by 10 degrees over a 8 hour period.

Soon to be added.

The Tower of Power. Utilizing a minimum of 4 SBC ( Single Board Computers ) the Powerleap Renaissance 370S, each with a 1 ghz celeron and 128 megs of ram. Floppy or CDrom bootup, then connecting to a network drive to do the folding on.

I'll put up pics when I get the TOP done, should be interesting. I'm still trying to decide if I should use 1 gigantic 600 watt PSU, or go w/ 4 slimline MATX power supplies. The slimlines would be much cheaper, 25.00 a pop, but would make installation of them rather tedious.

Currently folding:

my 500mhz celery laptop (24/7) (gonna have to oil the little CPU fan soon, before it wears out... :)
my 1ghz PIII work machine, (takes a break over weekends, damn!)

is it just me or is our # of "weekly active processors" going down steadily? it was over 300 not long ago and is now around 260. or am i just reading the stats on the folding site incorrectly? (havn't been to statsman in ages... i'm using Opera and the 3rd java applet, individual breakdown of our team members, doesn't load. bleh.)

JQ

EDIT: oh hang on, there's an HTML version of that page...

Yes, I have a problem...I'm checking several times a day...obsessing over daily production rates...dreaming of new iron to add to the er, um fold...

JerryLS and Warfin have been dogging me hard :D I'm trying to hold them them off in my climb to the top ten! :) Right now JerryLS is over me in weekly production by a gnat's eyelash.

So far I'm running:

1.2GHz TBird

1.3GHz Duron

These are going 24/7. My Mom ( bless her heart :D ) has her Celeron 766 running off and on for the effort.

I'm getting ready to add an older 900MHz Duron...this is sad...I bought the parts JUST for FOLDING!!! Whatthehellswrongwithmeaaaaaaaghh!

I got a K7S5A, the Duron and a Volcano copper HS for $60 and slapped it into a case. Maybe tonight I'll get it up and running if I can keep my 2.5 year old daughter busy...

damn

You guys are really making me work. What's with the 900+ point weeks, Damage??? WOW!

I'm folding on everything I can get my hands on but I just don't think it's going to be enough.

Maybe I can link a few old casio calculators together and get a few WU's squeezed out of them. :)

Here's my "farm", lame as it is:

- P4 2.2GHz with 1GB of RAM
- P3 1.13GHz (512KB cache) with 1GB of RAM (sometimes)
- P3 700MHz with 768MB of RAM
- Quad P2 450MHz with 512MB of RAM

I need more machines. Prime1 is about to kick my ass.
