I did not see how expensive the newegg one was compared to the one you posted either....that is a huge price diff :o

Yeah, I've seen that around.

However, as I don't use any media-cards (my iPod does me ;)), it doesn't seem worth the extra layout. Oh, and I want two hard-drives!

To me, there is more to keep in mind.

For those of us with multiple machines, do you buy one for each machine?
What about your laptop? It still needs something external unless it has a reader built into it already.

It also depends on how often you use so see if the money is worth it.

Me, I have one USB multi-card reader that I use now and then between three systems.
Doesnt get much easier then that.

As I understand it, the only reason for wasting a slot on removable media (CDROM, FDD, DVD, etc.) is the inability to boot from USB or Firewire...and of course data transfer rates. Does anyone know any clever ways around this?

Depends on your motherboard I guess. I know my SN45G's mobo supports booting from USB, so the only floppy drive I'll be getting will be a cheapo USB one.

Yeah, newer motherboards can boot from USB. Those pen-drives are very nice for that. You can fit an entire OS on them, if you play your cards right.

Ok, I'm only slightly surprised that no one else has brought this point up, but here it is from me: can I expect this device to work with a linux distro? I suspect the answer is yes, due to gleaned info, but I would like a definite yes or no answer.

I'm way outta my element here (no Linux experience) but that multi-drive runs off USB, so if your distro has USB support wouldn't that ensure proper operation/support?
Isn't having a smoking section in a restaurant
