Well, when are you going to buy?
If right now, the GF4 is not available. That leaves the Radeon 8500 and the GF3Ti500.
What games do you play? The Radeon's and GF3's respective architectures each lend themselves to some games better than others. So, if you could post which games you are/want to play, we can tell you which card would be best suited to you. Also, do you need GOOD 2D? Dual-monitor ssupport? TV-out? What about price; how much are you prepared to spend? All these factors can come into play.
If it helps any, I currently have a Radeon 8500 (retail) in my primary workstation, and a GF3Ti200 in my LAN box.
Give us a little more info, and we can help you out much more easily.

I like to play mostly all games like Unreal Tournament, Serious Sam, No One Lives Forever etc. Games with HIGH detail. Anyways, how is the Radeon 8500, in your opinion which is better? I plan to spend about $300 on a video card

Well its all about time. Me myself right now would get a Geforce 3 ti 500 over the 8500. Just personal preference and the fact I'm not interested in video in or any thing like that. Also if you got the money and can wait I would just get a G4 so I could show off to all my friends !

OK, what *I* would do: buy Radeon 8500. Use money saved VS the GF3Ti500 (which just went up in price) to buy a second monitor to run on the dual-output 8500. I think image quality is generally better on the radeons, especially in D3D games. Q3-engined games still love the GF3 core however, both in terms of framrate, and an edge in image quality as well. None of the games you mentioned are Q3-based however. So, the Radeon seems to be the best choice to *me*. As always, YMMV.

I think it's funny how nobody has even considered the new Radeon R300, which will also be coming out soon. It's going to support Direct-X 9 and have clock speeds higher than the GF4. They expect ATi to go for NVidia's jugular on this one and with ATi securing partners away from NVidia so does everyone else in the industry. The R300 may be the best bang for our buck in a few months. Either way, everyone wins as both companies try to play "catch-up" with the other.

I don't think r300 wll come out anytime soon.
I believe r300 is meant to take on nv30 so they would both be released around the same time

Also it's still to early the tell if any chip has dx9 support as has dx9 hasn't been finalized yet.

According to Theinquirer.net, the R300 is expected to come out sometime in late Feb./early March. The chip, supposedly has already been finalized and the design has been sent to ATi's partners for manufacturing. Regardless, you can bet that they'll release it close to the release of the GF4. Both companies aren't just sitting on their asses. Also, you can bet the R300 will be much cheaper than NVidia.

Well, i believe that the core of R300 won't be much different than R200. That's why i referred to this feb/march release as the R250.

Also this jives with the fact that i'm hearing R200 to be dx9 too.

It's not like ATI to release a completely new core so soon after it's previous.
