pM vs p4M

Im looking at getting one of the following systems: (both DELL systems)

P4m 3.06 wHT
512mb DDR333
40gb HDD
64mb FX5200go
15" SXGA


Pm 1.4
512mb DDR333
40gb HDD
128mb R9600pro
15" SXGA


Im looking at spending no more than $2400AUD. and plz dont recommend athlon 64 laptops seeing we dont have them here and if we do they will be 5x more than anything else.

The uses for this laptop:
-office apps
-visual studio programming
-gaming !

Im not that concerned with battery life as long as it can last more than 2hrs in VS. Id really love to be able to use this laptop as my LAN computer, therefore gaming preformance is vital. Any help would be great; and yes i know that in a few months newer and better things will be out, so plz tell me something new! :) thanks.

Heh, the obvious choice is the Pentium M model. Using an FX5200 Go for gaming is gonna kill performance instantly, hence the ruling out of the P4 3.06. The Radeon 9600 outperforms it in any conceivable benchmark and game you can throw at it.

Don't hesitate, get the Pentium M laptop. :)

yea i was always inclined towards the Pm model due to the radeon, however im worried that the lower ghz rating is going to stunt preformance... is this true? what P4m is a 1.4 Pm compared to in terms of gaming.

A 1.4 P-M will probably perform similiarly to a 2-2.2Ghz P4-M. But that is still plenty of power for most games and you will get much better battery life.

I'd got for the 1.4GHz"M" just because of the Radeon 9600.

i doubt you will get 2 hours out of the pee 4 desktop chip. best performace would be to simply drop the dough and get the fastest p-m you can get

Please, once and for all, get over the raw clockspeed number. It should be clear, by now, after seeing the PIII, P4, PM, Celeron, Itanium, Athlon Tbird, Athlon XP, Duron, Opteron, not to mention non-x86 chips like the Power5, that raw clock speed tells you exactly nothing about the performance of the processor.

yes buub, i do know that clockspeed is not everything, however what i want to know is; will a p4m 3ghz be far better in games compared to a 1.4 pm? even with the different gfx cards. i know the 9600 is a far better gfx card however will its preformance be effected by the slower (gaming) processor, in comparison to the 3ghz with 5200? please reviews, preformance specs would be big help :) thanks for your time

It depends...

My suggestion to you would be to Google for some reviews on the net and look for comparisons using games that are similar to what you like to play.

No. For the purposes of my point the same family means identical FSB's, identical cores, identical caches. In any case I was just being facetious...
