I'm a grad student, and our department uses all 200-Mhz 128MB RAM Ultra Sparc machines for their work. I'm interested in picking up something, personally, that's a bit more powerful than that (uniprocessor), and was even hoping I could find it in a notebook. As I've never followed Sun hardware before, I'm looking for advice. I'll take any and all info you've got.

Only thing Im, aware of that you can do is to get the x86 version of solaris 8 to run on a notebook.

I know that's possible, but then I have to worry about driver incompatibilities, not to mention getting ahold of x86 compiled versions of a lot of the software we run. (That's the big one. Some of that software is pretty expensive, and getting them to put it on my laptop will be hard enough, much less forcing them to buy a new version to do so.)

On a similar note, how much would a desktop sun machine run (that's faster than what I've described)

I don't think Sun has ever produced a notebook and I know of no other sparc based notebooks. The sparc family doesn't lend itself it to small form factors and low power consumption so its no wonder you don't see any sparc notebooks.

As for desktops, Sun is priced remarkably low for something that would meet your needs. You can get a Blade workstation for $2000-$3000 brand spankin new.

Ive seen a few float through the FS/FT forums for really cheap at anandtech, arstechnica, and hardocp.

I agree with cRock, the Blade is probably the best affordable option open to you.

A long time ago (think 95???) Sun was developping a laptop, but very few were made. I believe these mostly ended up in the hands of marketing people, although they pop up here and there now and then. But they're essentially collectors' items. I concur with everyone else- a sun blade is probably your best option cost wise.

ya, ive seen a few of those old laptops floating around ebay. Slow things though, like 40mhz i think

Pricing is not listed...Just drop an E-mail by their sales reps. These portable UNIX workstations use the embedded USIIe running at 400Mhz and 500Mhz. They are Solaris 8 certified.
