Does windows xp support DVD playback out of the box or do you have to install some type of decoder software?

AFAIK Windows Media Player or something has DVD playback, but if you have a DVD drive, you should have some form of DVD playback to install anyway...

You need seperate decoder software and then WMP will play the dvd. Licensing issues on DVD playback is why, MS didn't want to have to pay for each copy of xp.

Related thought. Is Microsoft selling the decoder or should you snag a third party one?

Hello all I'm new to this Forum, and so far it looks to be a prety good one. In any case, you can actually download the necessary codec for DVD playback in WMP. The only bad thing that I found is that it will sometimes stop playing the DVDs because it detects copyright protection. POWERDVD 4 and other 3rd party players seem to work much better. If you need the codec I can send it to you.
