Best video card for around $100?

Postposted on Sat Jul 24, 2004 9:49 am

OK, need a cheapo video card than can do somewhat well at 3D games. I'm quite familar with high-end stuff, but don't know jack about low-to-mid range stuff (well, nVidias anyway).

I am leaning towards nVidia, since they've got much better Linux drivers. However, the I don't care about 3d under Linux - all gaming will be under Windows.

What are good bargins in the GeForceFX 5x00 class? I know the ATI 9600 Pro is great, too...

There are several threads on this topic already. Did you find any useful suggestions in those?

Clinking on the banner at the top of the page takes you to the fine vendor who can provide these products:
$ 94 Radeon 9600 128MB 325/400 MHz VPU/RAM speed
$103 Radeon 9600 256MB 325/400
$111 Radeon 9600 Pro 128MB 400?/600?
$128 Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 400/600?
$ 92 Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 400/660 - refurbished <- Best 3D gaming under $100
$137 Radeon 9600XT 128MB 500/600
$107 Radeon 9600XT 128MB 500/600 - refurbished
$118 Radeon 9700 128MB 275/540 - refurbished
$132 Radeon 9700 Pro 128MB 325/620- refurbished
$137 Radeon 9800 128MB 325/580 - refurbished (I bought one of these and flashed it to a 9800 Pro. :D )
I'm not convinced that there are any good choices in the GeForce FX line. I'm planning to jump straight to the GeForce 6800GT.

What's a "banner ad"? :)

Huh, a 9600 Pro for $92. That'll work!

This is for a 2nd system; I too am planning on a GT card at some point.

The prices that I posted for the refurbished items include $1 for shipping & handling. :lol:

I notice that a few of the refurbished items are now sold out. Newegg does a great job of keeping their catalog up-to-date. To find current deals on refurbished items, click here, then enter your search text (e.g.: DVI or 9800) to refine the listing.
