new SN95G5 looks hella sweet

Sun Aug 29, 2004 10:37 am

Just look at that thing. Looks so sweet.

Now, Do you think one of these could handle this little mach system I'm thinking of building? or would that be too much heat/power consumption?

A64 3400+
Corsair TwinX 3200LL (2x512mb) (already have)
2 SATA hard drives 1x WD raptor 1x WD 120SE (already have both)
DVD/CDRW combo (already have)
X800 Pro

Wow, that does look sweet. 240w is a bit low nowadays, not sure if those components will work with such a small psu. If it does work, that'd be so cool.

I dunno if that'd work with those specs. I know the X800 lines needs at least a 300W psu, doesn't it?

I looked up the xpc last night, it looks awesome. I really want to make a system based on it using basically the same specs as you've listed.

Throw in a FX-53, a Gb or two of corsair, and a x800 xt.

nforce3 ultra? is that 250 or 250gb or just vanilla? I wouldn't buy anything other than the 250 or 250gb personally, but everyone's needs are different.

Shuttle seems a little slow on picking up AMD chipsets for their SFF boxes. Kinda disappointing. I don't know, do you guys think differently?

Isn't the only nforce3 ultra that supports the socket 939, a 150?

I may just be talking out of my @$$.

I dunno. The SN95G5 sounds like a pretty sweet deal though. If only the power supply could be upgraded.

Don't be fooled by the 240W rating, we've qualified AthlonFX-53 and 6800Ultra (single slot like the ASUS card) in the SN95G5. The X800 is no problem, it runs quite a bit cooler than the 6800.

The chipset is the NF3 Ultra, which is the 939pin version of the NF2 250GB.

pez, it looks like you need to be looking at a 3500+ instead of that 3400+

I linked to this a while ago (22nd July) in a SSF review, damage or Dis said that there was a review coming.

My infrequently posting friend Fearless Leader just ordered one, he has the Shuttle the CPU and the RAM. I'll ask him to post his impressions when its all built.

Actually, pez-king, your specs are very similar to what I'm currently building.

You'll need a 3500+ or 3800+, since currently those are the only ones for 939 pin (unless of course you are buying opterons). The 3500 is probably the better choice, because the 3800+ is about $300 more. Seriously, dude, this upgrade is painfully expensive, so I'm hoping this upgrade will last me for a while.

it is nforce 3 250.

As for the RAM, I'm getting just 512MB (2x256) of Crucial's Ballistix memory. Sure it is only PC 3200 RAM, but the latency kicks arse.

Other than that, your setup is going to match mine almost exactly. I'll let you know how it turns out. I don't think the power consumption is going to be too bad. I mean, heck, shuttle built these things to be able to handle the X800. Since I'm not using anything in the PCI slot, I should be good power-wise. But, just to be safe, I'll run the math again.

Until then, peace out.

It's alive!!!

Okay. I got the stuff, put it together, and booted it up.

The sucker works! Here's what I'm running.

A64 3500+
512 MB Crucial Ballistix PC3200
SATA WD Raptor 74 GB 10,000 RPM on ATA1
SATA WD Caviar 120 GB 7200 RPM on ATA2
Pioneer DVD-DL/CDRW combo driver on IDE1 (Secondary master)
Sapphire X800 Pro Retail VIVO
USB Logitech Trackball
USB Coolermaster Keyboard

The machine posted on the first try.
All the memory timings and clock speeds were automatically detected.
Booted into my Windows XP cd and loaded.
Everything installed quick and fast.
Turned off all unnecessary windows services.
Moved static page file to ATA2 drive.
Installed motherboard drivers (quick and painless)
Installed all the latest windows updates (except SP2).
Installed Catalyst 4.9 (I guess the Pro versions don't have overdrive) without Control Center.
Loaded SW Galaxies on ATA1.
Ran it with all the settings turned to high. No slow down except for some hard drive grinding (ie. I forgot to defrag after installing that huge game).

Long story short. I had no power problems. Everything came up fine and runs fast. I've also noticed that the SN95 runs a lot cooler than my SN45. Must be that new big-arse fan in there as well as the new and improved ICE system. The clamps to hold the ICE heatsink to the chip is very good.

My only complaint is that the Shuttle only came with one SATA connector, so I had to go to Fry's and get another one to hook up the second hdd, but it came with a SATA power cable of the PS and a converter cable in the accessory box. It's like they were expecting me to use to SATA drives, so why not throw in the second cable. Hmm.

Actually, I think the cd ejector button on the exterior of the case is hit and miss sometimes. But, other than that, this is a stellar machine.

Glad to hear about your success!

Was your SATA setup uneventful as well - no floppy required?

I'm getting essentially the same box and have some questions still re ram - are you really convinced re the Crucial

One of my friends just got one. 3500+, 6800 GT 256MB, one internal IDE 7200rpm HD, 2x512MB DDR 400mhz, CDRW, and an external DVD. It screams. No problems.

I'd get one but unfortunately the 3500+ is the cheapest socket 954 processor and runs $350 or so. Eek!

This is because the PSU is only powering one AGP slot, one PCI slot, and two DIMM slots? It should be a significantly lighter load.
