Making TRFrankenbot scary for Halloween, 2004

Thu Oct 14, 2004 2:31 pm

Me and Emkubed have been kicking around Ideas to liven up folding and do something geeky cool. Here Is our current Brainstorm.

Why don't we all donate one machine for the week of Halloween? Switch the username over to TRFrankenbot for one week. That would kind of be a Boo! to all the people getting blown away by the new superfolder on the block. For the one or two machine people folding it would be a way to make a bunch of conquests quick and since all the points would be TR's anyway, I can't see how it would hurt.

I think I will do it even if I am alone. I will switch one machine over on the 24th and let it run though the 31st.

farmpuma edit (11 Oct 07): Added the year of origin to the title.

I'll fold all my new boxes from my upcoming office borging under TRFrankenbot until the 31st. Like I've said before that'll be at least 10Ghz...

I'll switch my 2.8c workstation at the office.

This is a good idea also for those of you who fold, but despair of ever rising high in the ranks, you could just leave it under the TRFrankenbot username and enjoy the climb. ;) If you do so, please let us know!

That's ok for just this once, but we've got UnitedGerbilNation and others for people who want to join a team within a team... I'd like to keep the Frankenbot "pure" so to speak, made of donated parts, not whole machines...

Good lord, today's Windows update ran and needed to reboot, so I used that opportunity to up the core to 5.02 (I'd been running 5.00 just fine) and fold under the FB name, and now I'm in a constant reboot loop. No luck at the recovery console, time to reinstall.

Oh well, I've had the same install since Feb, so I'm doing pretty good... but still, there goes a few precious hours setting everything back up

I've had one machine update and restart fine with the newest update, but for another I've not restarted it yet since applying the update, and now you've got me worried. :o

I've decided to contribute two systems to "Project Halloween Frankenbot"...

Image
I thought this one was rather appropriate, given its rather "Frankenstein" nature. It's a diskless Duron 1.1GHz running LTSP, that has been chugging away on a table in my office for several months.

Image
This one is my original "FrankenPuter", built several years ago... this was my main workstation for a while! It consists of the shell of an old Micron Pentium Pro system, a Micronics (who are no longer in business) C200 Super 7 mobo running a beta BCM BIOS (to enable support for the mobile K6-x+ chips), and an overclocked K6-III+ CPU! Yes, that's a QIC-80 cartridge tape drive below the CD-RW drive... old skool! The vid card is a Voodoo3, and the HSF on the CPU is a generic Socket A cooler with the fan removed (yup, passive CPU cooling). A real patchwork monster of a system...

Image
Closeup of the custom nameplate (heh I lost the cover for that drive bay, had to cover it with something...) I made for this system, back when I originally built it. Look at all the dust buildup around the Zip drive... hmm... wonder how long it has been since the Zip drive was actually used?

Yes, kvndoom and all in it's path be very afraid! On this witches sabbath when the normally awesome Frankenbot gains the turbo boosted power of hundreds of gerbils, the beast will be unstoppable :o Hide the women and children, put the animals in the barn and do not look directly at it. Heed this warning and you may survive!

wow...180 points yesteday...that is sad, ya'll...we have 1 more week to get 4036 points to #100...that's a tough one..but TRFBot will survive

on a related note, I went with my gf to see a ballet telling the story of Frankenstein...I enjoyed it more than I thought I would (3rd row seats probably helped, not to mention gorgeous company), but I couldn't helped but be reminded of our great Fbot 8)

Heh! I rented "Van Helsing" yesterday, and though the movie sucked horribly, I too could not help saying out loud "it's the Frankenbot!" at inappropriate times. At least I live alone, so no one can commit me.

Loved it drfish .. I laughed my butt off  Pikachu scares me .. I slept through the majority of two of his movies. I suspect a good deal of subliminal damage, although nothing but paranoia, so far ....

I just reassigned my XP 1800+ to the Frankenbot Halloween effort. It was originally brought back online specifically to help me catch atryus28... that mission has been accomplished (assisted by his recent move, which temporarily took 5 of his systems out of commission).
