Need some shuttle expertise...

Fri Nov 19, 2004 1:06 am

So soon i plan on buying a Shuttle, but there's a few that im lookin @ and i cant quite make up my mind just yet, and was hoping some of you SFF folk can assist me....
My 2 choices:SN45GV2 / SN41G2V2B

Now i know these are kinda old, but im not ready to dish out $2xx for a friggin proc (A64), im plenty happy with socket A for now....
Now some things i would like to know is what size is the fan in the I.C.E shroud, will my Gainward 5700Ultra fit in either of them, and how many 4pin molex connectors are there (est.)?

Possibly more questions to come....

Hi Felix,

First off, if your choosing between those two, it's a no brainer...The SN45Gv2 wins. The reason is simple. That model sports the NVIDIA nForce2 Ultra 400 chipset, officially allowing up to 400Mhz on the FSB. The SN41G2v2B has the NVIDIA nForce2 chipset, limiting you to a 333Mhz FSB. Some people have been able to to get theirs up to 400Mhz on that chipset, but it really depends on your chipset stepping (version) and a little luck.

Other than that, the only other real difference (aside from the looks) is that the SN41Gv2 has built-in graphics through the IGP. But, it's only a Geforce4 MX, hardly anything to get excited about, especially if you game. Both I.C.E systems work with a 80mm fan, so the housing is just a little bigger than that.

I actually have the SN45G. I run an ATi X800 Pro, so your video card will fit just fine. You will only have trouble with any video card requiring two slots. As for the molex 4-pin, I think I have 3 in mine. But, splitters are dirt cheap, so that's not a problem. I also did some really simple mods to mine to get it running fairly quieter than stock and cooler as well.

To keep things simple and up to date, the SN45Gv2 is the way to go. If you have any questions, or want some pics, let me know.

Good luck...

Overlord, thank you so much,...and that black case was lookin so sezy too, although its $60+ price addition wasnt so sexy....
I had a few ideas for cooling, but i wasnt sure what size fan the shroud had because some1's review on newegg said something about upgrading the fan to 92mm, 80mm & 92mm fans are hard to differenciat from when its in a tiny pic....
I was thinking of using a SPEEZE Socket A/ 370 1U Low Profile for the proc and place a SILVERSTONE White 80mm in the place of the shroud, its a rather cheap and easy mod i want to do, cuz even if it doesnt cool to well i can always toss the fan and HSF in my other box....it's taken me forever to find that damn fan *grumble*

And as for the video card, i had no doubts that it would fit in my current case until i got it, this card is exactly 5mm's longer than my board when in its slot, and barely clears my hdd's power connectors...i plan on measuring it soon....

Felix,

Hold everything! A quick check on your video card from the Gainward's website reveals the following information (located in the System Requirement towards the bottom): "Requires a vacant PCI slot adjacent to the AGP slot. This board occupies two slots: AGP and one PCI." You may find your products website here: http://www.gainward.com/html/product/vg ... vi2-gs.htm

So, if this is true, then you won't be able to use that card in either Shuttle you were interested in. The problem is not length. Both Shuttles (if not all) will accomodate up to almost 9.5 inches in graphics card length. But the AGP slot is at the edge of the board near the case housing. So, the card can't be wide and and have a tall heatsink or other obstruction. It seems, in your case, it does. What does your current setup look like now? When the card is pluged in, does it clearly overlap the PCI slot next to it? If so, your out of luck.

As far as the fans go, you can't stick a 92mm inside the case without removing the fan housing all together. It's built exactly for 80mm. Even the outlet on the back is just big enough for that, with very little room for compromise.
...review on newegg said something about upgrading the fan to 92mm
I believe they mean to the outside, most likely using a 80mm-to-92mm adaptor (usually in a push-pull setup). This is quite popular in the SFF mod crowd. But putting one inside in replacement of the 80mm is really not practical.

Before you worry about that, let's get the video card situation figured out.

Good luck...

Overlord,

What mods did you do? Was it to your XPC or to your X800 Pro? I have a SN95G5 cube and I am deciding on either an X800Pro or possibly a 6600GT. I have a 6800GT and I have no stablitiy issues with it, but it is to hot, too loud and draws to much power forcing me to leave the cover off.

Your tips and suggestions are appreciated.

Cheers,
Scott

Felix, may I humbly suggest the Biostar IDEQ 210N, which is also the nForce2 Ultra 400 chipset, but I'm reasonably certain that the AGP and PCI slots are rearranged so that you could actually get a two-slot solution, like the Gainward card you're looking at.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

Derfunk, i was just on my way to check out newegg for those very SFF's, i was actually considering those last night because of the cheaper price, rearranged slots and the SoundStorm APU being better than my Audigy LS...

Talk about post whoring...:D
Anyway, as for some extra clearence and ventilation, i was thinkin of grabbing the Black Mesh Case Cover and the Blue ELwire Face plate for the shuttle down the road some time soon after i grab the shuttle itself....
