Shuttle XPC with a new nVidia 6800 GT?

Mon Jan 24, 2005 6:17 pm

Hi everyone. A little loving for the SFF forum. I just got a Dell 2001FP 20 inch LCD screen. It is the sweetness but that has nothing to do with SFF does it?

The problem is that since the native resolution is 16X12, my 9800 pro cant really keep up like it could when I used to game in 10X7. I was looking to get either a X800pro or a 6800 GT. The 6800 pretty much kicks the crap out of the Radeon but I am worried about power requirements so I am still considering the ATi card.

I have a SN45G v1. It is the nforce2 based XPC. Right now I have one DVD burner, 1 80 gig drive, no floppy, 1 gig of PC3200 and a Barton running @ 2.2GHz. I have a SBlive and a Radeon 9800pro 128MB as my expansion cards. So far my little beastie has never shown any problems whatsoever handling that load.

The XPC only has a 200W power supply and it must be a good one to run what I currently have in there but I am afraid that a 6800 GT might be pushing its limits. I have the option of buying the 250 power supply from newegg for 70$ but that seems excessive for a PS. I would imagine that the extra 50 watts would do the trick for a new card but am still unsure.

Any thoughts on what I should do or does anyone have any experience running the newer video cards in an XPC? Any replies would be very welcome.

Something isn't right there. I have a 2001FP with a 9600 XT and play any game I want just fine. UT2k4, WoW, WC3. All at 1600x1200 no issues at all.

With no AA and AF I assume correct?

AF yes no AA. I really can't see a difference at 1600x1200 with it on or off.

To oversimplify, when you use AA it is just rendering at a higher res and then averaging the pixels down to your actual resolution. When you're running at 16x12 the pixels are small and dense enough your eyes more or less do that for you. Particularly on an LCD where the pixel latency provides some unintentional temporal AA.

Z-man...

It isn't that I cant play the games at 1600x1200. I just can notice the difference between that and the 10x7 I used to run at. Everything was much smoother and I miss that. I also am playing WoW and UT2004. WoW is more than fine at 16x12 but even UT2004 seems slow to me @ 16x12. CS:S and HL2 are fairly unplayable at super high resolution, that's why I want to upgrade. I can live without AA too but I need AF now. I cant go back. :D

The fact that the card is practically paid for also helps the decision. I could live with what I have but since I have all the Best Buy gift cards, I might as well use them.
