Hi,

Well, it's time for the obligatory (and hopefully flame-free) "which distro do you use" poll. Fire away!

Debian at home (ie, for preference), Redhat because that's what work already has.

I use RedHat. I admit it: Debian's installer left me cold.

Debian, Redhat, SuSE. For my firewall I am using the Linux Router Project's Dachstein. My favorite distro is Debian. I do not use Xwindows on my personal systems, but I do use it at work.

Slackware. The one true Linux distribution. (I forget who came up with that one...)

Mardrake 8.1. Hey, lemme alone, every1 was a n00b sometime! I do plan on moving to Debian though, when I have more experience with the CLI.

I'm using MkLinux on my 60 Mhz Apple 6116CD. It's redhat 5.2 based and not terribly good, but it's the only UNIX that will run on that ancient hardware.

I like Mandrake. It's like RedHat, but all the included "crap" works. I couldn't ever get a good install of RedHat. It would either mysteriously install things I de-selected or hose other things up.

I use SuSE 7.3. I've been a SuSE fan for a couple years because of all the software they provide. It also lets me stay just a little bit self righteous in relation to the RH and Mandrake community. ;P

Seriously though, I've never had an install problem with SuSE products and they give more software on disk than any other distro I've seen.

Redhat for me. Mainly because I know exactly were everything is and how it works. I have been playing around with Redmond Linux though. Its a pretty nice distro for the n00b

We're using RedHat here at work, for two reasons:
1. It's the only distro one of our vendors is certified with
2. Support -- our management for some reason feels better with this...

Mandrake 8.1 Gaming edition at the moment. I have to admit, playing the Sims on my Linux box is a geek thrill.

RedHat 7.2 simplest one I've found so far that both my wife and I are happy using.

I was a SuSE addict until I got my fat pr0n pipe, now I get roughly the same effect from Debian, plus I never have to wait for release *.* to get new feature X.

Odd that I'm yet to stick my nose in here. So, here goes.

Redhat 6.2 (updated and modified) on my internet server.
Redhat 7.1 (modified) on my file server
Mandrake 8 on my main workstation.
Debian on my firewall (newest addition)

Also have used Slackware at various times.

So far I have found Mandrake to have the easiest install, and Debian to by far be the most customizable. My Debian install is currently 52MB whereas the closest I could come with the others was about 180MB.

Slackware just bugs me because they don't use a SysV init structure.

My $.02.

Debian is teh win. I love any distro that lets you mangle it so intensely with so little trouble.

*BSD is next on my list to try. Got Net*, Free*, and Open*. Any advice?

Start with Free, then try Open. I hope you remember disklabels if you want to try Open

Can't comment on Net as I haven't used it. As I don't have an ARM system or an Acorn I don't see a need for it.

For general purpose desktop/server BSDebauchery choose FreeBSD. If you want to run a no frills server or mystery hardware, then NetBSD is good. If you want to run a VERY secure server, choose OpenBSD.

Fileserver: Slackware 8. latest with package updates from pub/slakware/slackware-current.
Laptop: Red Hate 7.2. No, that's not a typo.
Desktop VMWare: Varies day to day pretty much, would like to see good QNX support from VMWare.

I use gentoo for just about everything now. Work and Home.

IMO, it is the best distro available.

Cuz it was certified for use with Oracle, which I wanted to play with at home.
