The case/optical drives I already had. I still need to order the hard drives and video card - that'll have to wait till I get paid next week. HDDs will be 2x300GB Maxtors, video card will be a 6800GT (since it's only $277 now). The Lite-On POS is going to be the first thing to go, too. I want something that doesn't sound like a jet engine when reading a CD. I'm thinking a PX-716 for a primary burner, and using the BenQ for reading.
Now: some will question why S754? Here's why: cost/performance ratio.
This thing is mostly for games, and I do want to move to dual-core in the future. But, seeing as how costly that is, how poor I am, and since I'm mostly playing games, this seemed the best setup (the new X2/3800+ would have been more $, plus slower at games).
S754 is cheap; the CPUs are FAST; hell, the 3400+ will beat a S939 3500+ (and probably the S939 3700+) for alot less money. Me, I'll take 200MHz more speed over dual channel memory ANY day. Now, is the extra $50 for the 3700+ worth it over the 3400+? Probably not - it's mostly to make me feel good
- and hopefully help a bit when I do multitask.
Sure, I lose that "long term upgradability." But the last time I just upgraded a CPU was when moving from a 50MHz 486 to a 75MHz 486 - and only thing because it was free. As for PCI-E, well, no real point right now. By the time this won't run the games I want, the 7800GTX is going to be considered slow, so big whoop.
Next up: a nice 19" LCD (I'm thinking Viewsonic unless I can find a dell on sale), and some nice speakers (Z-5500?)...
