a QUEST for a Ultimate us$ 350 system

Sun Jul 17, 2005 7:52 am

okay .. hii .. noob here ..
here's the deal .. i have 350 buck to spend on Mobo, processor, cheap casing , pair of memory stick and alsoo ... a HD

i've already dug out bunch of info about intel based system .. and i decide that i would go for Socket lga775 ...

so .. HD ($50) casing ($20) memory ($80) .. whats left now is a mobo and a processor ..

i need suggestion on mobo first because i need a mobo that has graphic onboard and can survive for another 2 year.

(LGA 775 + video) mobo + (celeron/pentium) processor = $200

anyone ?? if u got better idea .. i could use one

thanks

Socket A would be both cheaper AND faster. Most socket A boards are sub-$100 on Newegg, and decently-fast processors are too.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

This will run at 2.2-2.4g...and will run better than the one intel you have picked out...add a decent nf2 board for say $75 AND you are under budget.

The socket A's are cheaper but not better. I don't know where you guys came up with that idea?

I think that statement is made within the understanding of cost constraints (especially in this thread). That is to say, you are going to get a 'better' cpu if you spend $75 on a XP than if you spend $75 on an intel product. And as for the A64s... you know the deal as I can see from the sig.

To the original thread question. Don't just forget the PSU and get the cheapest POS you can find. It is possible to find a non 1st tier power supply that is decent but just be careful.

Well, if you're willing to go a bit above your target:

A64 3000+ - $146
ECS RS480-M - $79
2x Corsair 512MB PC3200 Value Select - $82
WD 80GB 8MB SATA - $56
Rosewill case w/ 350W PSU - $20
(wouldn't put much trust in that PSU... but you didn't say you needed one, so just ebay it ;)
---
$383

For most tasks (eg, not rendering or video editing) A64s are faster, they're more future proof (64-bit), and they run cooler as well. (You can overclock them too if you want, which I'm not sure whether I'd attempt with a Prescott.)

Otherwise, replace the appropriate components from above with:
P4 2.66GHz 533FSB - $133
ASRock 775Dual-915GL - $63
---
$354

You can save another $5 by going with a 40GB/2MB PATA drive, but that'd be dumb, I think.

How about this CPU for 83 and this Mobo for 66. Then add the components Illissius found, or maybe get a better power supply.

U gave me a good list there .. i might consider this option ..

no .. i dont think i would go into this one coz it only offer a little option for me to upgrade .. no socket A , i'm sorry .. beside it only support AGP ..

i might change my path to get my self an AMD instead of intel .. i notice there are 2 type onboard graphic .. Intel Accelerator 900 and RadeonX300 .. anyone know .. which is better .. i just want to play average game (sims2, igi 2, ) with the minimal requirement ..

still .. i'm still confuse .. is AMD 64 3000+ better than P4 2.66 GHZ 533 FSB ?? according to the GHZ factor .. intel is far higher than 1.8 offerd by AMD64 .. explain please ..

Sounds like you need to do a little reading up on some articles comparing the two..here is one on a 3500. It has some graphs in it with the 3000 in it..and if youll notice the 2.8 Intel chip is below it in performance.

The Radeon Xpress 200 is ~twice as fast as the Intel GMA900, iirc, though both are much slower than a discrete card. The A64 3000+ should also be a good deal faster than a 2.6GHz P4 -- and that's not even taking 64-bitness into account -- but not by an order of magnitude.

wooopp .. change of heart ..after reading through the humangous review made by people in TR ( a clap2 .. big one ). AMD is my choice .. 64 to be exact .. well .. AMD 64 3000+

so now .. i need help to resemble my list ..

processor - AMD 64 3000+ (939 sc)
memory - 2x COrsair 512 mb 3200 value
hd - WD 80gb 8mb SATA

sum that up .. ive already spend $ 250 (in malaysia .. i can get amd 64 3000+ for $105)

so .. now .. about 100 bucks for a motherboard and a casing .. i need a mobo (939) that can still be a upgrade without full overhaul for the next 3 years .. decent onboard graphic for my gaming(its okay if it only can pump 15 fps for SIMS2) .. pci-e slot (it would be better if it offer agp slot too) ..

sooo ... (i cant get an ECS RS 480-M anywhere in Malaysia) so .. other solution ..

I second that.

But he needs a mobo with integrated graphics. The Radeon xpress 200 is going to be the best for that, plus it has PCIe for future upgradability. Though I might be inclined to take this MSI instead of the ECS mentioned previously, it has four ram slots.

woa .. holla if u please ..

MSI is my choice .. MSI RS480M2-IL .. but .. u know since my country has a small market 4 system builder soo this mobo might not exist here (i dont have any active online method of payment .. if u ask why i dont e-bay)

i would be glad if u guys can sum up other choices .. so that .. if the shopkeeper says "doesnt have that" .. i could come up with other solution ..

overall .. the quest is ending ..

Welcome to the forums. Notice the handy edit button on the side of your posts.

If I were building a $350 I would not get a gig of memory. Sure memory is cheap, but you don't need a gig on a $350 system. You won't be gaming or doing anything memory intensive on a $350 box, so saving the $40 is worth it.

oppss .. miss that button .. thanks ..

anyway .. i do gaming .. but budget is only 350 .. but still i need a gig of ram coz some of my game need 512 .. so .. 32 is already deducted to the integrate video ..

guys .. i only found 2 939 mobo that has a video onboard .. there must be more than that .. anyone ??

[Bump]

Sorry, cracksys, it's the weekend and it's July; many of us NorthAmericaners are on holiday/vacation.

Any more suggestions from those of you who know motherboards better than you know your own mother??

There is this but I would pick the MSI or ECS first. There isn't truly much in the way of integrated video with socket 939.

Socket 754 has more options when it comes to onboard video.

Tell you what - go onto Neweggs website and do some searches for mobos with onboard video for the socket type of choice. Write down a list then go to your retailer and see what he has from your list. At least you will have a good idea of what options are available (maybe not in your specific region - but overall).

I do this all the time. I create a list, go onto http://www.pricenetwork.ca and check who has what, where, and at what price.

Some solid advice.
As spot the cat said, to have the best all-around system for the $$, get 512mb of memory. It's not worth the trade-off to get the 1gb, IMHO.

ANY games will run poorly on integrated graphics no matter how much system memory you have.

On the lowest gaming budget, this is what I would do.

socket 754 motherboard with AGP
athlon 64 cheap for 754
512 megs of corsair/mushkin/twinmos/kingston value PC3200 1 stick (because it isn't dual channel)
grab the best $70 graphics card you can find... do some research. I do not know what the best is, but my guess would be a refurb 9600pro/xt
put the rest into a cheap but decent quality case/psu. an antec 3700AMB comes to mind, but I don't know how cheap you can find it. it has a quality 350 watt power supply that will run any rig you can afford.
cheapest HD you can find. I would check your sunday paper for sales with MIRs... and make sure you push that MIR through, you need to be very pushy with this.

haha .. so sorry .. didnt know anything bout u guys having holiday ..

yup .. thats true .. if i were thinking of short-term investment .. iwould surely build a 754 socket system .. but .. i cant see AMD releasing any new processor on that system in the future ...

i'm still a student and might stuck in this U for bout 3 years more .. i must get myself a system thats upgradable for that time

i've done researching and only found 3 mobo that has onboard video .. thats quite a list .. :-?

so .. this quest is still in the running .. as i didnt receive my allowance yet .. any comment would be nice ..

anyway ... why does "ANY games will run poorly on integrated graphics no matter how much system memory you have" .. any explanation .. and does this include ATI Radeon X200
