I have a Gateway Select 700 (Athlon) PC (born in 2000) with a Mid-Tower case ("Flat Side Mini Tower Chassis Rev. 9, with ATX form factor") I need to upgrade the power supply, as the current Newton (NPS-200PB-96 D Rev. 01) with 200 watt power is going to be inadequate with some upgrades I'm pursuing.

Does anyone know a good power supply unit that will fit in this case without modifications? The Newton measures 6.5" x 3" x 5" (L x W x H), although with the bottom mounted fan the space available is more like 6.5" x 4.5" x 5". Thanks.

As others in this forum have said....Research....go to the web sites and look up the specs....see which will work...ie....Thermaltake...Antec..
Go to google and see what they give you, and go from there...If you are gonna upgrade...do so with at least a 350w, prolly more...depends on what you are puttin in it.

A standard ATX power supply is 150x140x86mm (5.9x5.5x3.4 inches). We discussed microATX power supplies here:

I just dealt with a gateway case that used to be home to a p2 233. I used a dremel to cut a hole for a real atx power supply and it seems like it works, i haven't plugged it in yet. (ironically, it's got a different p2 system in there now, not a real system)

You can buy a whole new case with a 300W supply for $50. I'd look to see if the motherboard mounting points are standard. If they are, just get a new case.

You can get a whole new case with 350W power supply for $20+$15 shipping & handling. However, if you really like the old Gateway case, you can probably re-use it. Just be aware of the standoff issue (mentioned elsewhere), and be prepared to take a cutting wheel to the back to get the I/O cover plate installed.

Unless the case is really great, just get a new case as it will not have all the problems of a proprietary case. I have several old gateways, and the cases will not fit normal psus and boards. I will have to take the dremel to them and do some work to get new stuff in there. The only reason I am doing this is because I like to do it, but most people will not have the patience for it.

Thanks everyone for your comments. I didn't realize that there was a standard size for ATX cases. I think that should fit, although I'm not sure whether to get one with a dual fan. Questions. On power supplies with dual fans, does the second fan face up or down in a tower? Which way does the air flow? (Does it push or pull?)

My current one has a fan on the bottom, right next to the Slot A Athlon, but I'm not sure which way the air is moving. Guess I should open up and see. There is also a fan on the side next to the Athlon with a shroud.

I've looked at the Antecs, and they seem to be considered among the best. Is the Truepower series worth the extra $s?

The bottom fan pulls air in and then the second fan blows it out the back. As for the psu, you can have it facing either way up or down.

Check out ChenMing, Chieftec, and Antec cases. They have plenty of room for fans and are really easy to build into.
