Well, crunch time for a video card. With the recent (disappointing) news that the 7800GT would be $449, I'm thinking about something else.

So: would it really be worth spending that much on it? With the GTX only $50 more, it would seem that the GTX would be a better deal.

Now, my 1st choice was a 6800GT - but, I've gone with PCI-E, and that one is a bit more $ on PCI-E.

Hence the X850XT choice. It's about as fast, if not faster (I play mostly Far Cry), and about what I would have spent on a 7800GT.

With no benchmarks for the 7800GT yet, I'm not sure which to get (or something else altogether).

One big plus in my book for the X850 is the fan: it exhausts hot air out the back of the case instead of into the case. Yeah, it's two slot, but with that feature, who cares? Why nVidia hasn't done this...??

Oh: CPU is a S754 Athlon 64 3700+. Probably will OC to around 2.5GHz.

GeForce 6800GT 256MB PCI-Express with dual-DVI is what I would suggest at this time.

I went with a Radeon X800XL 256MB PCI-Express with dual-DVI several months ago. It is also a very capable card for slightly less money.

Ahh..$314 for a 6800GT! Nice. Might just have to grab that. Hows the eVGA brand overall?

As for the refurb...not sure I'd 100% trust one. But for $229, maybe.

"Refurbed" video cards usually means they had something wrong with them that was dumb, like a bad heatsink/fan, or were returned for other various reasons. It's more of an "open box" deal then a real refurb. There isn't too much you can refurb on one of these cards, IIRC.

Another thought....

Get the 6800GT, then get an Arctic Cooling cooler.

Very quiet, and exhausts air out the back of the case. Did I mention it is quiet????

11th is the release of the 7800GT

In my friends wholesale system the R520's have been moved from est 31/12/2999 to 28/08/2005.

I hope the release of ATI's R520 will shake up Nvidia's pricing a little. If Nvidia release a new higher end part in response it might bump the 7800's price down.

Yeah, I thought of that after I posted it. Heh. But my new PC upgrade strategy is "Is it Good Enough?" I wouldn't buy a new AGP card today, it's a dead interface. But that doesn't mean I shouldn't keep the AGP card and system that I've already paid for. :wink:

And yes, R&R is on my mind....well, mostly a set of 36Cs is on my mind. :lol:

The GTX started at $600, and now it's as low as $480 on newegg. I would imagine the GT will see at least a $50 price drop pretty soon after release.

if you order through dell right now, you can get a 7800 GT for only $331! i had to buy one, so i guess that means i have a pci-e machine on the way... :-?
