New motherboard smell

Tue Aug 30, 2005 11:22 am

Hey, does anyone else suffer from this problem? Whenever I open a new motherboard, it has an unmistakable smell, I call it "New Motherboard Smell." I'll sit there and sniff the new board, because it smells good! Has anyone else ever done this? Or am I insane, and should stop sniffing electronics for fun? Also, like new car smell, it goes away over time. :(

I think we like the new electronics smell 'cause it means that we have new electronics! To me, it means a faster, more powerful gadget to plug into things.

I've gotta agree on the bulk CD spindle thing. Smells like maple to me. The plant, not the syrup.

Sounds like you spend a good deal of time at the lanes, pete_roth.

Mmm... new electronics smell! :D

Other aromas I love:
Fresh hops (and fresh hoppy beer)
    Barbecue (especially pork)
    Pine forest
    Garlic
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Nice fresh smell of new hardware...

But nothing compares to the smell of a fried (note: Don't try this at home) Duron runing fanless for about 3 days and doing some hardcore tasks such as gaming and... more gaming.

I gotta say nothing beats that smell, maybe the smell of a burnt P4 (never tried that though)
Let there be... ROCK :)

If it smells really strong it probably means it didn't sit in the oven long enough. At the factory they use an oven to bake the chemicals out of it before it goes out the door. Some people get really sick from that stuff. It doesn't bother some people though. I guess some people are addicted to the smell. ;-P

For the first time in months, I opened up a new motherboard Friday night, and lo and behold, JNW is RIGHT...that smell is intoxicating. Or toxic. I can't decide.

Could it be the smell of fresh solder?

That's certainly not a bad smell...

I wouldn't know, I've never smelled a new mobo :(

Fresh solder does not have a particularly strong odor, unless it is really fresh (i.e. still hot). More likely it is the resins used in making the PCB.

Well... it's sort of like that generic "new electronics" smell you get whenever you open up a new VCR, DVD player, etc... yet enticingly different. :D
