Power Supply Calculator

Tue Sep 13, 2005 8:35 pm

Saw this over at Shacknews and figured it would be worth a repost over here. It's a power supply calculator. http://www.jscustompcs.com/power_supply/ . I can't vouch for it's accuracy, but it seems interesting.

336 for me. Awefully close to the 350W that I have.

I'm going to sticky this, so anybody feel free to add any other websites and opinions.

EDIT: forgot to add the video card. 393 for me now  Guess my computer is going to fry soon :D

You can ignore these power supply calculates wattage needs to be balanced with what each rail can provide. Both of these calculators spec my shuttle higher than the power supply (240w) and people are running much bigger rigs than min of 240w.

Have a read of the following.

Most PC's require less than 250w.

I think it's more of a general guide, not an exact science.

it doesn't even have most of the newer stuff though. It doesn't stress quality over quantity either :(

One would imagine that if a PSU says that it can handle 15A on the 12V rail, that that means that it can support at least 180 watts of usage at once on that rail. The discrepancy with the cheap brands lies in the fact that this is more of a maximium, not a minimum.

mine's coming out to be 410Watts[under 100% utilization]... i think thats a bit less as i have 7 fans running at full blast along with all the hardware...

For me it's 329w if assuming 100% utilization. I guess I'm safe with my TRU380

just totaled up my farm...

537W :o

that's running off of 3 200W PSUs so that just leaves me with the electric bill to worry about

the duron 850 I've got in there just can't be worth running 19MHz per Watt as opposed to 28 for the duron1600, might have to get some more of them

Wow, I calculated 278W under full load, but my actual power meter under load reads 160W.
When the CPU manufacturer lists power requirments, it must be absolute peak power which I think you would be hard-pressed to replicate. Under load my AMD64 X44200+ is only requiring 38W with two instances of folding running, while the calculator lists 110W. While folding probably doesn't stress all parts of the CPU, folding must be a fairly good stress test.

It still amazes me how much power video cards are using these days.

Yeah, AMD quote power output as absolute peak, while Intel list it as some kind of "real life" figure.

I've always been supprised at how much difference the various FAH cores have on heat output, almost 10C on my 3000XP.

322 watts...interesting, I thought I was using more than that.

Oh well, my Antec 480 has got me covered at any rate.

While that may tell you what you need in terms of power, its always good to have a supply that give you more than you require. I use a 20% cushion to be safe.

My dad's comes in at 509 watts.... I guess he'd be safe with a PC power and cooling 510 :)

If only he had SLI 6800U then he'd be hard pressed for a capable unit.

409Watts using the overclocking calculator.

Hugs my Thermaltake 420Watt, and whispers sweet nothings to it!

So far so good, it's been about 1.5 years so far.

Note to self: Buy 500Watt PSU next time around.

First calc says 684 watts. Second says 544, but it's also assuming one CPU.

Guess my 500W Antec really is overloaded. :P Looks like the PCP&C 850W I'm ordering will do the trick, though.
Please don't edit my signature for me. Thanks.

The Shack site recommended a 405-watt unit; I'm currently running a 550-watt PSU. So I'm good.

The first link didn't contain an option for a dual Opteron. This is the problem I have with most calculators; not configurable enough.

I can't comment on it's accuracy, but here is a maintained calculator that a) is free and b) gives a whole wealth of info, including rail specific amps

Never forget that the PSU calculators always use peak power draw values for all your components, which is basically an impossible-to-obtain situation. In any case, the calculator in the 2nd post is what I've been using, it has every component under the sun and options for everything.

It would be nice if the site were updated to calculate the latest hardware (CPUs, GPUs, etc). According to UPS software installed on both my boxes the old unit (Old Reliable) uses more wattage (216-232) than the new one (Big Ed Mustafa at 155-164). And that's with a quad-core CPU installed.

I thiNK the difference is the neww box uses all SATA drives which require less power. The old PC uses SATA hard drives too but also one IDE drive and three IDE DVD burners also.

The second link (eXtreme calculator) is very updated. My system is 263W at 100% TDP for CPU and 100% system load. I guess I don't need a 500W Antec after all.
