I am trying to decide between 2 pc options and wondered if anyone would help. I use my pc almost exclusively for playing online games such as World of Warcraft, Battlefield2, etc. My two options are:

Intel Pentium 4 processor 650 (3.4GHz, 2MB cache, 800MHz) supporting Hyper-Threading Technology
Intel 915P chipset motherboard with PCI Express, 1Gb LAN, dual channel DDR & Hyper-Threading support
1GB DDR2 533
250GB Serial ATA hard drive with 8MB buffer
256Mb ATI Radeon X800GT PCI Express graphics
19" Viewsonic VX912 pure digital DVI TFT monitor (12ms response)
Sound Blaster compatible 6 channel audio
Creative Inspire P5800 5.1 speakers

OR this:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ processor
NVIDIA nForce 4 motherboard
1GB dual channel DDR RAM (PC3200) 400MHz (2x512MB)
200GB Serial ATA hard drive with 8MB buffer
256Mb ATI Radeon X800GT PCI Express graphics
19" Viewsonic VX912 pure digital DVI TFT monitor (12ms response)
NVIDIA 7.1 channel surround sound audio (on-board)
Creative Inspire P5800 5.1 speakers

They are both the same price in the deal on offer. Is the AMD version better for gaming? Sorry, no further spec details available on the motherboard or other parts except that what is listed.

Id go with the AMD instead of the Intel rig.

Looks like the 3800+ beats the 670, so I'd go with AMD as well.

That said, do you mind if I ask what the company is that you're looking at?

I bet AMD wish that going Intel really was going against the stream... considering that Intel have a much bigger share, Intel is the stream, and going AMD is actually going against the stream!

He asked which was better for gaming which the AMD is. They are both nice machines and either will work fine. The Intel will run a bit hotter and wont play games as well and if he ever has need for a dual core application i think its the way to go

If you live in a cold climate, then the Intel will come in quite handy this year (promises to be a cold one).

What kind of mobo is in the AMD system? If the board is crap then expect crap performance, especially after a year or so when things start to slow down (get dusty, just age, etc.)

Are you planning on buying this machine pre-built, or are you putting it together yourself? Just curious.

i would go with the amd . better performance almost all the way around especially in games . that being said what is the price you are going to pay for the system ? it might be cheaper for us to help you pick out the parts and put it together yourself .

These are pre-built machines. In the UK there is a government initative where they are trying to encourage people to use home computors to improve pc skills at work. To this end they have set up a scheme where you can choose from a list of pcs and get a cheap deal by not paying tax and national insurance on what you are buying. My company has this scheme at the moment and those 2 pcs were the ones I had narrowed down to choosing.
