17" LCD: Samsung 730B vs Sharp LL-172A

Sat Oct 22, 2005 8:20 am

Have to make a decision quick (or if you can persuade me to calm down and not spend at all :D)

Futureshop is having a deal with the Sharp monitor, however, I was wondering if CAD$70 difference is worth it for the DVI, debatable 8ms response time and 150 more points in contrast ratio.

So here's the showdown:
Sharp LL-172AW (W - white model, 5 per store! :o)
Samsung 730B

Now, I know all about the advantages of DVI, in fact, I am a supporter in the forums too. But, this is going to go to my secondary rig which does not have DVI at the moment. Also, Sharp is a very good name for LCD, Samsung is just big so eventually they are going to churn out some good ones. The reviews that I have read suggests that even the Sharp is analog, it can stand on its own vs cheap-grade DVI and their CRT counterpart. Last but not least, I am cheap. :P

For all of you early birds I want to know your opinion. I am pretty sure they will be all gone soon.

PS. Not going to make a poll becuase I have a specific purpose for this monitor and a cheap budget. In general I would have picked DVI-capable models too myself.

Right, that's the thing, this is not going to my primary rig. If I were to get real LCDs for my main rig I will be going dual with all the good stuff anyway.

The only thing is, are the 8ms, DVI and a bit more contrast that much better?

But isn't the white sexier for you? :D

Also I think the Sharp has thinner bezel as well to add to the sexiness?

I'll probably go there and have a look myself later on too. If anyone actually has used either monitors some first hand experience will be appreciated. I just don't quite trust PC World's user reviews (or Futureshop's either).

Please do not buy an LCD monitor that lacks DVI input. :(

Normally I would be the first to say that.

But the deal seems too tempting and Sharp is like those exotic brands in LCD (like buying an Aston Martin? may be bad analogy). This is going to be an impulse buy...

Or, I could just wait again and prices will be even better?

Hey now, that's low. :) [and I'm too old for puberty]

If it were my main rig, I'll be looking at a couple of those new Eizo wide screens. That will certainly burn a hole in my wallet.

You need to buy 2 cuz they're small. Does that help.... were supposed to STOP him from spending money? Techreport is the wrong place to try and get that kind of help.

I hate 19" with 1280x1024.

I know about the Dells, they won't be a weekend impulse buy.

Damn it, 1704FPT is not available on dell.ca. The crappy 25ms 1704FPV is.

I see it listed at US$295 for now, but I know there are always deals. Need some US friends.

Anybody knows if Dell US ships to Canada? That 1704FPT looks really tasty, if it is going to be US$200 at some point in time... I don't think they do, but I am not sure.

Since it's not on the website, may have to call them and beg for one.

Just double-check the specs on the FPT, +/-70 degree viewing angle? That's kind of low...

I checked out the Sharp personally this afternoon. It is indeed pretty asthetically pleasing, which lives up to the Sharp name well. I would recommend people who don't want DVI to get it. For me, I'll be checking the Samsung 740B (looks like MagicBright II is a good feature to have), or any of those wild Dell deals if they ever come to Canada. :)
