A fair question about current vid card designs

Sat Oct 22, 2005 12:13 pm

After doing the usual r&d for a purchace of a new videocard, I ended up wondering the followin question:

How much would a following card configuration cost and how would it perform:
- A wide (say 12 pipelines) but low clocked (say 300 mhz) GPU
- 256mb of regular 200mhz ddr with 256bit bus
- Passive cooling

Would this be possible at 100 bucks? Would it perform much worse than a 500mhz 8 pipe GPU with 256mb of 500mhz ddr with 128bit bus (nvidia 6600gt) that is priced at 200 bucks?

:-?

That sounds about what some onboard cards are. What are the specs on the new 6100 onboard and radeon 200?

No way, those onboard cheapies are like 2-4 pipes.

I think he may be thinking along the lines of the GTO with the lower clock vs the 6600GT?

I thought he was asking more about why there isn't a card w/ said specs rather than trying to find one in there to buy. *shrug*

Then it would go into General Hardware, not General Graphics where it originally was. I just saw the "after doing the usual r&d for a purchase" and then the discussion of prices. Sounds like system building to me. ;)

If not, it can be moved to General Hardware.

I am beginning to resent the inescapable gravitational pull of the SBA. :(
