Any other auto enthusiasts around???
I'll start with my pitiful examples:
1977 Chev, 454: ~300hp, 500 torque(7-10mpg)
1980 Olds, 350: ~170hp, ??? torque(20-25mpg)

I love my old beasts...

My wife and I own a 1950 Buick 4 door. Straight-eight. Doesn't exactly run, but we're pretty close. We call her, "Sophie."

2000 Chevy Silverado
4.8L V8, 5-speed manual
When I had her dynoed a year ago, she was making 255hp & 261lbs of torque at the rear wheels with just a catback exhaust system. Don't sound like a lot, but I'm happy with it in lieu of more money and time to fix her up right.

1995 Mazda Rx-7 Twin Turbo Touring model. Stock with 255HP, right now with ~330 all pulling 2600LBS around. It is pretty slow...

2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 4.7L V8 and full time 4wd. This is for the 10 inches of snow we got yesterday and to tow my snowmobile that makes 115ish Hp at about 9000 Rpm.

2000 Mustang GT, stock except for 3.73 gears.

I'm surprised that a passion for performance computing doesn't seem to translate into other aspects of life. Everybody else drive an Isetta?

Addendum:

For the record, that's 260HP 300lb-ft

Heh heh, give me that silky-smooth throttle induced oversteer that only comes with RWD, or I'd rather walk.

Yes, Alanzilla, exactly! You can't make a silk purse from a sow's ear, and you can't make a sports car out of an economy car. Anything with less than 8 cylinders or with FWD is built for economy first and foremost.

You have to be careful, there. There's a whole lotta Supras with 6 cylinders that'll eat anything you can cough up with 8.

But they _are_ rear-wheel drive.

I'll have to disagree with that. Think Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo, Porsche 911 N/A or Turbo, and/or Mazda's rotary RX-7 to site a few specific examples. These all have less than 8 cylinders, but I would not hesitate to call them sports cars. Just because it doesn't have eight cylinders of American iron doesn't mean it's not a sports car.

Just my $.02.

'89 Honda CRX
just under 2000 lbs curbweight and 98 Hp.
its a fixer upper. in the process of changing out the seats, rust removal and body kit installation, and brake enhancement ( ventialted rotors/etc). future mod to get a b16A engine (160 hp VTEC version ) and install.
about the sports car thing, i don't really agree. rear wheel drive and v8 do not make a sports car anymore than four cylinders/front wheel drive disqualifies a car from being a sports car.

I don't know about a whole lot, they're as rare as hen's teeth, at least where I live. And let's face it, the only way they squeeze that kind of power out of a six-banger is by doing a LOT of squeezing! Adding massive amounts of turbo boost and/or nitrous causes longetivity and driveability to suffer.

OTOH, when you start with the displacement that you need to do the job right off the bat, things are a lot smoother. I can have a normally aspirated V-8 that develops mucho horsepower, yet runs on pump gas, requires no more maintenance than any other motor and can run at 100% all day with nary a hiccup. And since torque (what makes the car go) comes on down low, I don't have to thrash the motor, hence better driveability.

You have a point, CTG. Notice though that all of those have the rear wheels driven. There are some excellent RWD 6-bangers out there. But that doesn't mean that RWD + 6 = sports car. I'd call it a transitional area. Cars like the Porsche, RX-7 and the RWD + 6 Supras sports cars, because that's what they were engineered to do from the start. But Mom's Altima with stickers and a fartcan is NOT a sports car, no matter how silly it's made to look! In between, it's case-by-case. Personally I don't think the 300ZX makes the cut. It's just too slow. A nice 240Z with a little engine work is another story...

Bad news, the old 5.0 is gone forever, a victim of emissions laws. RIP pushrods, long live cammers! From what I've heard, the '03 Cobra will still be a 4.6. And it's going back to an iron block! The good news is that they're supposed to be blown, putting them at Corvette power levels. And since they're in the same weight class as a Vette...

You would think so (and so would I), but you'd be wrong.

There's a bunch of Supras down here in Austin. Almost all of them have more than 100,000 miles on them, and the only work they're doing is upgrading fuel systems and putting bigger turbos on them. I know of a few that have more than 1000HP to the ground, and probably a dozen with more than 650HP.

Ah, but FWD + 4 does keep your car out of the sports car ranks! Get your hands on a real sports car and you'll see what I mean. As much fun as a CRX might be, it's still an economy car at heart. Not that it can't be fun--I had a Renault R5 "Le Car" that I raced years ago. But I had no illusions about beating my friends' RWD + 8 cars with it! That's what my '67 Camaro was for...

Alanzilla, I've heard the Supra claims before. I'm not saying that Supras are bad cars, but the proof is in the putting. The Supra guys in my area never show up at the track to put up, and thus they have to shut up. If it's different in Austin, then great! But I've known my share of surly ricers from Austin that talked a big story but couldn't produce, so you understand why I take it with a grain of salt.

BTW, there's a saying in the high performance world: "Going fast costs money; how much do you want to spend?" Another says: "The only substitute for cubic inches is cubic dollars." Those Supras that cost ~$40K new (+ the cost of extra work) better perform! But I can build a more tractable V-8 car for a lot less.
