HDD missing 20GB's

Thu Feb 06, 2003 11:29 pm

i have a Western Digital WD600BB which is supposed to be 60GB's but when i tried to reformat it, it only showed that 40GB's were there. it was a drive i purchased for 20 bucks from a friend who knew someone so this is probably why its screwed. i checked to see if it was relabled but checking under windows it did read that the HDD was indeed a WD600BB. could one of platters be dead or something? anyone have a solution?

thanks in advance

Maybe the BIOS is mis-identifying it.

Try going into fdisk and seeing if there is any un-partitioned space left on the drive.

You may have to expand the partition out to the full 60GB.

 Partitions is where my money would be. You could also set up the unused space as an extended partn to utilise it, which is simpler. As your HD stands though 40GB is a nasty size if you still use FAT32.

Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Administrative options -> disk management

Delete any partitions on that disk, create a new 60GB one. If it still comes up as a 40GB, go beat your 'friend' and get your money back. If it comes up as 58.5GB, then you're just seeing the 1000 vs. 1024 bytes in a KB issue.

;) You tend to lose a little in formatting too!

Also, did you actually look at the label on the drive to make sure it was a WD600BB?
