At home it looks reddish as you describe on my LCD. That really is cool!

It's a painting done on a cracked wall. You might need to turn your monitor brightness up a hair

exactly. so it has NOTHING to do with REALLY configuring my screen.

yes, i'm on a CRT... and the monitor -IS- configured for optimal performace
and color... i dont find it necessary to jack up the brightness another 200%
just so i can see someone else's blacker-then-goth picture... there's a
thing in PSP/PS that you can adjust your brightness for your own pictures.

Well then don't bother looking at the picture. It's that simple. All my my pictures are completely unedited. I never do anymore more than crop ones for a 16:10 background image.

Thanks slavik. It wasn't nearly that red in real-life, but I guess the camera has to make some adjustments in the low-light.

I use a hardware calibrated monitor, and it looks fine. And the black levels between my calibrated CRT and LCD are similar, even if the absolute black-level is higher on the LCD.

HEY!!! Lets keep this a picture thread, not a critique thread!!! Plenty of room for that on a new thread.

Thanks... Hopefully if I find a moment, I will post some pics from my new Sony R1. This camera is great! (Big)

i just wanted to take the time out to thank FireGryphon for his
PM to me concerning this matter, he linked two sites which were easy
to follow and very helpful in this matter. going back to the two pictures
on the previous page... they no longer are both black, and i can see the
difference big time... sorry i complained about this earlier, but i had no
idea my black point calibration was off, as many of yours could be...

Most people really doesnt know, because they havent had a reason to look it up. Personally, since i started dwelving into the computer side of photography. The abyss that is colour-spaces, gamuts, conversions, profiles and all other Photoshop mojo, i tend to take some things for granted. Which means i forget what its like to sit on a non-profiled monitor. At least youve seen the light now, literally.

A Sony R1 scaled shot:

Image

Huge Original:

Take a peek at the EXIF info.

I like others using the R1 am having trouble focusing in low light. It seems to lock at the wrong points, so I am suspecting a software bug. The illuminator is a simple really bright LED, and it doesn't cut the cake.

Some more images here:
http://www.markwyman.com/photos/default.asp

Portraits come out simply awesome. First Sony I know of that doesn't over-saturate Reds and leaving us pasty white folks blotchy. Wife vetoed her pictures going up, sorry. Colors are as good as they get. Resolution is great, especially at 35mm and larger. Wide angle a bit soft, but that could be my apreature too... Getting used to it.

Did a small photoshopping of a image in the perpetual thread in the ars-fora. Ill link to the image instead of hotlinking though as the source image wasnt mine to begin with but a guy called reboot.

Lightsaber baby

Edit: tried to link directly to the post, but for some reason the #postnumber doesnt work. Stupid browsers fora issues.

ok ppls... i'm kinda excited here finally cuz with all my previous posts
have been just commenting and questioning you all without really
participating in this thread with pictures (mainly cuz i didnt have a good
enuff digi camera to do so)... so now for xmas we got a decent digi camera.

not sure if you all think its good, but i like it. it's minolta's dimage x1,
and it goes up to 8 megapixels! now i can show you some of the pix i took
while we were in philly over the new years eve holiday:

(click on 800x600 pix to see original size)

Image
this is a pic of a church that i liked how it turned out dark. making it
brighter did not serve this picture justice, so i left it be, untouched.

Image
i think this is the betsy ross flag building. my GF took this pic, neat angles eh?

Image
longer then 800x600 a bit... this pic i cropped cuz i like how i cropped it.
i could use some pointers on how to photograph something like this a bit
better.. philly's city hall clock glows a bright yellow and it was hard to take
a clear picture that was crisp enuff. i tried many ways, but this is the best
one that came out of the bunch. the sky was a bit misty/foggy too from the rainfall.

Image
couldnt resist snapping a photo of this guy riding his bike around the
streets of philly sportin' a viking helmet...

Image
went inside some artsy place and i loved this mork egg chair, so i took this
photo... any ideas how i could have taken this a bit more interesting?

Nice camera Gleek, looking forward to checking it out.

Appears the biggest complaint is limited manual controls and a 3.5sec interval in between taking pics (slow response). That's the smallest Minolta I've seen.

This was the best shot I can get using my Canon S1-IS. I tried it the fukk 32x zoom.

lex-ington:

Canon digital cameras are well-known for their purple fringing problem in high-contrast shots. The effect you complain about is endemic.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Those are nice pics, lex, keep up the good work.

The blue fringing you see in your pics is a result of the light energy on from the bright areas hitting the sensor and bleeding into the surrounding areas. It's called "blooming" and happens to consumer level cameras, particularly those with small sensors and high pixel counts (which is most of them these days). You can edit it out in photoshop easily enough.

That last pic is cool. Is it all indoors?

EDIT:

...and while I'm at it, the pic of the leaves is overexposed. Try using a faster shutter speed and smaller aperture. That'll help keep blooming down, as well as make for a nicer exposure.

to use that cool word without the 'c' in it? o_O

Yeah that last pic is all indoors. Cool building. The Hockey Hall of Fame is in the underground level of that building.

Question: How do I adjust the shutter and aperture? Is that the macro mode stuff?

I have no idea what all of the means. I bought the camera to do close up shots of jewellery. I'm still looking for a book that breaks it all down for me.

Edit: I have to resize those pics so I abide by the rules.

You can check the manual that came with the camera for exactly how to change those settings on your camera. It's GOT to be in there.

Macro mode is for shooting things close up. Telephoto is zooming in. Wide angle is zooming out. In all three cases you can change ISO, aperture, and shutter speed.

thats a good point.. can anyone reference a site online or a cheap book
that goes into the very basics of taking good digi pix with any type of camera?

That was supposed to read FULL 32x zoom.

My camera is 3.2 megapixels. I had it set on Large format.

When I took the shot, I held the camera for a portrait shot, set to Black & White. It should be fairly easy for your camera as well.

That's the stuff I don't understand. What the ISO numbers mean and stuff like that.

The camear has a number of manual settings, but for dodo's like me - it like talking to a chicken - in COW.

ISO is the speed of the film for 35mm film cameras. it seems they just carried the term over for digital cameras. the genereal rule is the lower the ISO, the less grainy the picture.

yeah but lex's camera is only 3 measly megapixels.. mine is 8.3+

so i can take that same photo inside of toronto at 3264x2448. wouldnt
that mean my pic would turn out better and high resolution and it would
fit more into the pic as well?

and my camera is rated with this:

Lens 7.7 - 23.1 mm (35 mm format equivalent: 37 - 111 mm), f / 3.5 - f / 3.8; 12 elements in 10 groups

which exactly means WHAT?

I thought the quality of the picture is based on the quality of the lens, not the amount of megapixels, and that the megapixels was for the size of the print and how much info you can fit in that said size?!?! :-?

I know tyhe camera I have has Focal Length: 5.8 (W) – 58.0 (T)mm zoom lens
(35mm film equivalent: 38 (W) – 380 (T)mm)
and aperture of f/2.8 (W) – 3.1(T) and shutter speeds of 15 – 1/2,000 sec. How they all work together I guess is the key to taking really good pics.
