so it all comes down to 2 choices:

-1- Wüsthof Classic 8-Piece Knife Set $299.95

-2- Shun Classic 7-Piece Cutlery Set $439.95

and i'm strongly in favor of the shun mearly for the sex appeal of the kanji :)

The first one. Because everyone here said they are great.

Perhaps your chances of actually getting one of them from the registry would be improved if you went with the cheaper one. Is the kanji really worth that much more to you?

Is this the same as the shun set you have there?

Also, have you handled both sets? You really should do that. So much of what makes a knife or knife set rigth for a person is their feel in-hand.

yeah i think thats the same set! but @ amazon for $398.95 ? wow! $41 cheaper! i wonder what the s&h is... hmmmmm

VG-10 high-carbon stainless-steel blades with 16 layers of stainless alloy for Damascus look

ORLY? how do they forge 16 layers of steel and make it seem that its one piece of steel still? interesting concept...

The handle itself is comfortable and the balance feels natural. Although the manufacturer says that these are dishwasher safe,
I would suggest immediate hand washing after use and complete drying before returning it to the block.

but yeah mattsteg, i should handle both sets to see which feels better... good point!

If I was ever to pay that much for some knives, I would want to be able to toss them in the dishwasher too. But hey, that's me.

Exactly. Tossing it in the dishwasher is not good for the knives.

That's not to say you can't. The Wusthofs say that you can throw them in the dishwasher. But just because you can doesn't mean you should.

the real major difference between the wusthof's and the shun's with tossin' em in the dishwasher is the handle material...

the shun's are made up of resin-fused black hardwood handles, whilest the wusthof's are not.

ok, last night after work i visited williams-sonoma in michigan's ritziest
mall in the world, the sumerset collection.... the guy allowed me to handle both the
shun knives and the wusthof knives.. and proceeded to explain many
differences between the two sets as well as explain the benefits of each.

i found it odd that shun does not have a corporate website of their own!?

the shun's ARE like pieces of art. from the bamboo block to the fake 16
layer damascus look (it's real, but 16 layers hammered by machines
rather then 1024 times for a real damascus is hardly a comparison) to
the odd feel of the elongated bolster. the shun's were noticably lighter
in weight compared to the wusthof's...

the wusthof's are. for all intents and purposes, way more practical in the
kitchen. yeah you get an oak block. and the handles are not made up of
wood, but the germans balanced their knives ever so perfectly and it even
feels good in your hands!

so i saved a couple hundies and decided to purchase the starter 8-piece
set of the wusthof's and brought them over to frobozz's house for him and
his wife to check out (they were laughing at me too for being so silly to
drop $300 on knives, but i guess they just cant comprehend the quality
being such an important factor vs cheap kmart knives the way many of
us can here), and then showed them to beth when she got home and she
was very happy with my decision! :)

Dude, that was uncalled for. I comprehend quality just fine.
I also believe in buying quality stuff, and it'll last you a lifetime. I have done this in many areas. Just not kitchen knives. Try to single "us" out as unable to understand or whatever compared to "the rest of us here" smacks as an insult. You and Beth are different then my wife and I. You said yourself that you had buyers remorse when you stopped by. You even mentioned you could have gotten a nice 19" LCD monitor for that. Or a color laser ptiner, etc.

I don't think it's dumb that you:

1. Wanted a really nice set of knives
2. Thought about putting it on your registry

We were more laughing at the fact that you become obsessed with things to the point where you decide to spend big bucks on something just so you can satify your obsession and then more onto the next thing. That this all started as "what should I put on my registry" and finished with you just buying the set for yourself. And hey, that guy was probably right about putting such expensive things on your registry. The guy was also a salesman.

You and Beth cook more then we do. You have more TIME to do this. You have more of a "food fetish" in general more then we do. You like uncooked fish products. The knives we use to chop up our food is less important to us then many, many other things we would rather spend $300 on. That and I like to throw dirty utensils in the dishwasher. So I would never spend that much cash on knives if I couldn't/should'nt. Different strokes for different folks.

Just don't try and insinuate that somehow we are too dense to appreciate fine, quality things. That's wrong. Very wrong. Thanks.

That's why it's so important to try before you buy. Ergonomics matter a lot.

simmer down pilgrim. maybe i didnt say it in such an eloquant way, but for the most part i wasnt that far off base.

of course! everyone is different! der... i have buyers remorse for ALL
purchases i make, regardless of what i'm buying.. it's always easier to
buy then it is to save... thats where the remorse comes in play. at no
point was i remorse over the quality of knives i purchased.

a salesman, yes, but i was the one who walked in his store, and also i was
the one who asked all the questions, in which he answered. during my
entire time with him and in the store was he ever pushy or asked me if
i wanted to make a purchase... that was purely my decision.

true. we do love food, not sure it's a fetisch. MANY ppl in the world enjoy
food and cooking way more intensely then we do.

and as far as 'sushi' goes, i'm sorry, but millions of ppl in this world we
live in enjoy sushi more then you can ever possibly imagine.

sorry, we do NOT have more time then you. just cuz you have a kid now
doesnt mean your time is less then ours. hardly. once again, besides my
full time job, i attend college on a full time basis (min 12 cred hours), have
homework to do as well as studying, attend a fitness club 2-3 times a week,
dj weddings and various clubs/parties on weekends, maintain various
websites, and so on.... not even including the everday humdrum of
home improvement on a house that wasnt taken care of.

if you throw "good" knives in the dishwasher it voids their lifetime replacement guarantee...
so i dare not ever throw my wusthof's in the dishwasher. tyvm :)

what i said wasnt said in the most nice respectful way, i also did not
post with the intentions of stating that yer too dense or unappreciative.
you just made me feel real bad about something i felt really proud of,
that is the reason behind why i posted that comment. sorry if i offended.

Don't confuse inability to comprehend with not caring or being budget conscious. Anyway, I'm waiting til I get a place with a bigger kitchen before I invest in a nice block set (they are decorative after all). In the mean time I'm slogging by with a couple single knives. :P

None of my comments should have made you feel bad.
If you recall, I was exclaiming about how awesome they were.
I would be proud of them as well, if I were you.
I hope they last as long and work as well for the both of you as we both anticipate they will. What can I say, I guess I would have put them on your registry and waited to see what would happen. But that would be nearly 1 1/2 years from now. Since you've been studying this topic so intensely, and upon hearing that guy's suggestion about registries, etc. I could see myself making the same decision as you did. In no way do I think you were dumb...Just crazy spontaneous.

Apology accepted.

fits my persona then doesnt it.. crazy spontaneous. but at least i did
some research on it before i made the purchase...

as for the registry, i think i need to be more realistic when it comes to
that. i just cant see friends and family of a middle class nature dropping
hundreds of dollars on us. realistically, ppl spend a max of $50, or even
$100 per couple if they're nice :) i just dont see ppl going beyond that
price range unless yer rich or something.

and speaking of knives, i got my old set in my car for ya, it's a farberware set with block. their website is at:

http://www.farberware.com/cutlery.asp?hm=Y&ct=N&anw=N

and the one i'm giving you is the 2nd one down, the soft grip set. and the
best part about them for you is: Dishwasher-Safe/Hand Washing Recommended :) :)

And you are grossly wrong on that. My wife and I put a number of high dollar quality items. We both come from very average middle class families and got some of those items. It's were my 8 piece Wustof set came from. Family member especially want to get other family member quality items that they know they will use and last a long time. To start the new couple off on the right foot.

Not to mention good friends. I know some of my friends surprised the hell out of me with some of the things they purchased. And it was not like we twisted any arms. All we did was put it on the list.

I know when I can I splurge on weddings, more so if it is close family and friends.

ok wrong i am, only cuz i'm new to this wedding game. even though i've
dj'd over 12 years of weddings, never have i been in one myself! :) i
always assumed the envelopes contained $50 per person (mainly to
cover the cost of dinner alone), otherwise, anything lower, the person
is a cheap455... i mean bride and grooms dont tip the dj as it is and the
dj does more for the reception then any other factor, period.

If you put a high dollar item on the registry and the item is really nice and can mean a lot to the couple, friends will band together and pool their resources for that. So you should put a items of varying prices on there. At least that's what I would think, but what do I know, I'm not even dating. :o
