Hi,

This is a hoot. I expect a lot of the folks here read Slashdot, but just in case anybody missed it:

http://slashdot.org/articles/02/03/06/1 ... ml?tid=172

Reminds me of those stories about a US Intelligence bureau listening under the Russian embassy in Washington for keystrokes and using data analysis techniques to work out what was being typed. I think it's called "sideband data."

Heh. The Soviets listened to the electronic noise from our Selectric typewriters, to tell what key was pressed.

hehe I can just see all the paranoid folks out there screaming every time their modem lights blink...

And then there's the fone line their using, that has a scrambler and is in fact a public telephone using an acoustic coupler. In fact, they don't live in a house at all, they move from cave to cave to fool imaginary pursuers

You know anyone like this?,

Eh, he's an idiot.

e.g. on Ethernet NICs, the blinking is per frame or per group of frames, not per bit.

I swear, I have no idea why the ACM is humoring him.

Nonetheless, a tinfoil hat is a prudent measure!
