Tanker27, what are you doing tonite? I'm sitting here at BDE Headquarters pulling duty as a favor to someone. At least I get a chance to study for my A+. Damn printer questions drive me nuts. Honestly, who the heck is still using dot matrix printers....

I know there are a lot of dot matrix printer kicking around school here, hooked to apple IIe's and oscilliscopes. I think they basically are used for certain labs and then shoved in a corner somewhere until next year. They are slow but the program they use works and it seems to be a decent use of old hardware.

I thought it was funny some of the printers are same as the one I had at home hooked to an 8086. I don't know where they find print cartridges/heads for them any more.

Actually, DM printers are still used quite heavily in the financial/banking world. For example: Go to the average bank teller and ask to buy a cashiers' check. Dollars to donuts, if it isn't typed out on a typewriter, it's run through a DM printer. Say what you want, but the damn things are indestructible. I think you could actually use an old IBM ProPrinter as an automotive jack stand while it's still printing.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Hey Vrock, I know what you mean about those A+ printer dot matrix questions. I'm studying as well for my A+, gonna get it this summer. Also, If you are planning on continuing in your IT training, microsoft just came out with a new certification program called the MCSA(Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator). It requires you to be A+ certified as well as take 3 exams, 2 of which can be used towards your MCSE. Here's the link http://www.microsoft.com/traincert/mcp/mcsa/default.asp If you are interested.

No prob DiMaestro, I've been looking into going for the MCSE and came across that while on microsoft's website. It looks like a great certification that gets you on track for your MCSE. Hopefully you can get a job as a Sys Admin. and get network experience while at the same time working towards your MCSE where the $$ starts. In all actuality, you could be A+, MCP, MCSA, MCSE, & MCDBA certified after 10 exams!!!(Including the 2 A+ exams and exam 70-218). The trick is not to fail the exams. Nothings worse than paying $1000 on exams just so somebody could say you suck!!(lol)

Vrock, I feel your pain...reading the chapter on printers for the exams was the worst. One of my friends got an MCP in Windows XP instead of A+, he couldn't make himself read about printers.

There was some weird acronym for the laser printing process, like All California Cows Do The Fandango. Not that I can remember the steps anymore, anyways ;-P

Well, in Milwaukee, WI all of Time Warner's work orders are pounded out on a bank of dot matrix printers. It makes sense, since then you can use carbonless quick-copy paper, and do the quadruplicate forms that are required. A laser printer would actually have to print 4 separate pages, while an impact printer (i.e. dot-matrix) can pound on the top layer, and have it pass through to the lower layers. One-pass printing is kinda convenient.

Hmmm, I don't know about that. Factor in the relative speed of a good laser printer, the superior print quality, the overall cost and environmental factors like noise, and impact doesn't seem to be a good deal at all! All things considered, the impact printers are really just a kludge to support ancient office technology, long after it's obsolete. I would think that Time Warner's technical management is reactionary, looking back on a time when multi-part forms were innovative.
