Hi,

I recently bought mandrake hearing it is best for newbies and I've installed that. Now I want to have a go with some other distros and see which I prefere. What should I go for?

Dave.

Hi Dave, welcome to the Linux club!

Before you go off to another Linux distribution, why don't you spend some time with Mandrake? They really aren't that different, and Mandrake has more stuff than most. If you're new to the whole UNIX paradigm, Mandrake will allow you to do more without having to hunt around. Eventually you will learn about the rest.

I've been using Linux for a long time now, and I prefer Mandrake. But if you want to try others, Red Hat and SuSE are worth a try. I wouldn't recommend Debian because it doesn't do much for you unless you're pretty knowledgeable already.

I personally have been playing with SuSE for a while and quite enjoying it. I agree with Speed play around with Mandrake for awhile and then maybe try something else. It's all a learing experience.

Being new, you're probably best off sticking with Mandrake, getting to know that. Other distros will, if anything, have less to offer to you (as a newb).

Agreed. If/when you get serious take a look at Debian, especially if you want to run a server. We discussed this to death here.

Dream on, cRock. My Solaris box is a real UNIX system. No need to get Mac-phony here.

Oh snap, did you say mac? I KNOW you didn't say mac. I'm going to bust out the Performa 6116CD (60 Mhz PPC) running mkLinux and lay the smack down on your Slowlaris box.
