Antec Minuet Thermal Issues

Wed Nov 08, 2006 8:26 pm

So here's the thing, I'm getting an older PC (AMD XP 2200), and I need to get a case, mobo, KB combo, PSU, and USB wireless network adaptor for it.

Here is what I have in mind. The items highlighted is what I have to get still:

Cooler Master CM Media 260 case
Foxconn K7S741GXMG-6L mATX
AMD XP 2200 CPU
2x512med DDR 400
DVD-Rom
WD 80gig PATA HDD
SilverStone SST-ST365 PSU
Logitech S510 or E110 Keyboard & Mouse

So now I still need to decide on a USB adaptor . I have a Linksys wireless router already.

This is really to ditch the DVD player I have now AND to get my wife off of my main machine before she erases something.

What do ya think?

- Would you get an Asrock board over the Foxconn?
- You find the Antec NSK2200 looks better than the Cooler Master case?

Edit: I just changed the subject of this post.

The NSK2400 seems to come with a PSU.

I would look at the Fusion also.

If you are ok to spend more I would take a look at the SilverStone offerings in that category.

Have you seen the price of the fusion? $195 + 14% tax will be $222.30 for a case that probably cost more than all of the internal pieces together.

I like the NSK2400, just wonder if it will be . . . appropriate . . . for what I/wife will be doing. :-? It will eliminate some cost, that's for sure.

I came away with neither case. I ended up with the Antec Minuet 300. Believe it or not . . the NSK1300 (Aria) isa not deep enough for a non-standard HSF. I bought a Thermaltake RX K7 and it was about 3/4 inch too high.

My Final build is:

Antec Minuet 300 case - still had to swap the fan on the HSF (but still very quiet)
AMD XP 2200 - free
512 megs DDR400 - free
Faxconn K7 mATX mobo
80gig HDD - free
DVD-Rom - free
Gigabyte Radeon 9250 - free
Leadtek Winfast TV2000 capture card
Wireless network card - free
Logitech EX110 combo
Windows 2000 Pro (may up it to XP Home)

Just a side note to everyone looking to get into a SFF system, alot of the cases out there is huge, so if you want small - make sure you can find a low-profile card. I used my Dremel to cut the top off of the network card. . . . tomorrow - the video card and capture card gets the Dremel treatment.

I have a question . . . . If I can undervolt an Athlon XP2400, would that reduce the heat being produced by the processor?

I put the stock fan back onto the HSF (actually got it to fit in the case), but the fan spins at 2700rpm which is too loud for the living room - especially when watching movies - and now the system overheated for the first time last night . . . very upsetting!!!!! Hence the question.

If I can undervolt the processor, would I turn up something else that would let it keep its stock speed and still run cooler?

I am wondering if the video card has something to do with it?

THX.

Yup, every heat generating component should contribute to overall heat.

Undervolting will definitely help, but it does depend on how much lower you can go. I am not sure if the stock fan can adjust RPMs?

Failing that (if the fan is still too loud), you may have to grab an aftermarket one. The Copper 3 is supposed to be really good with a reasonable price. I found that the Thermalright SI-97 is too expensive and you have to get a separate fan on top.
