Upgrading LCD

Fri Dec 29, 2006 12:18 pm

Hi guys. Finally making the jump to LCD and getting rid of a 19”CRT, also hoping to reclaim some space on my desk. :) I am leaning toward either one of these:

Any thoughts? Primarily used for gaming and general surfing maybe a movie or two. Also would like to stay under $350. Happy New Year all!
:P
Thanks

Depending on the games you play, you may need a pretty high-end video card to run those at native resolution with playable framerates.

You should also verify that the monitor you buy supports using the center area of the screen at lower resolution (say 1280x1024 or 1280x960), to get you a normal 5:4 or 4:3 aspect ratio. That way you'll still be able to play games which don't support widescreen, without the picture being distorted (stretched).
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Those look pretty sweet. If possible use some coupons to bring the price down on a Dell. BTW, what gfx card do you have?

Thanks Flying Fox and just brew it, good points. To be honest I didn't even think about wide screen conflicting with some games, more to consider.

I'm actually still using a...Ahem!...6600GT, really trying to hold off till the midrange DX10 cards come out, hopefully soon! I've heard nothing but great things about the Dell displays, so waiting for a "Dell Deal" may indeed be worth it.

Thanks for the input everyone.

If you are after some quality don't fall for the cheaper E207 and E227 though, you would want the 2007FPW/WFP (whatever they want to call it the time of day).

Doh! I just realized I know a girl that works for Dell in sales. I’ll just take her out for a few drinks, get her loaded, bring her back to my place, log on to Dell.com and have her enter her employee discount code…

Well something like that. Thanks for the input everyone.

Pretty much the one stop site for widescreen gaming:

And yes. You will need a better vid card. These screen run native resolutions of 1680*1050. To runs games with some degree of quality you may need a 7900GS or better... fortunately 7900GS cards are as cheap as hell these days considering their performance.

As for recommended screens?

Either run the games in widescreen, or just use aspect scaling with something like 1280x1024/1280x960 and be done with it.
