Positive Playstation 3 Talk and Q/A

Wed Feb 07, 2007 8:48 am

Just wondering if there are others out there that are enjoying their PS3's.

Please no bashing or naysayers here, there are plenty of other places and threads for such comments.

So far I have bought Madden07, NHL 2K7, and Full Auto 2 in the store. I've also purchased the full versions of Lemmings and Blast Factor (with multiplayer update) from the online store.

I've also downloaded all of the demos that are available.

Favorites so far: NHL2K7, which is great / Blastfactor Co-Op mode / Lemmings (been so long for me, it's new again).

Big Mistake: Full Auto 2, which I bought at the same time I bought the PS3. Poor gameplay!!!! Which I would have read a review first. Might end up returning this to Gamestop for credit toward a different game.

The graphics are wonderful, although so far there's not a ton of good games to buy. I was looking at that Resistance game, the new Sonic, and Grand Turismo HD (the demo is amazing) as possible next-buys.

Its good to see the frequent updates coming from Sony, good to see them hard at work improving things.

I have yet to buy any PS2 games. I'm especially interested in getting an old-school arcade-retro game. My wife has asked to play old games like Galaga and Joust. Can someone recommend a PS2 game that was good for this? I understand a recent firmware update fixed the graphics corruption in PS2 games played on a PS3.

I got my PS3 two weeks after the launch. So far, I've bought Resistance and Ridge Racer 7. Resistance is a solid game, to me it's the killer app as far as the PS3 is concerned.

One of the reasons I bought it though was the Blu-Ray player. I recently bought a Sony HDR-SR1, the 30gb hard drive HD camcorder, and I can copy about 40minutes of HD video to a DVD, which the PS3 reads as a "AVCHD" disc. I've tried to play the disc back in a few computers, and every of them have dropped frames, whereas the PS3 plays those discs back flawlessly.

I admit that the PS3 online presence is not as mature as XBOX live, such as not being able to use the PS3 during downloads, but at least we can download 800mb demos like GT HD. I bought BlastFactor, but I didn't realize that there's a multiplayer version out there to download. And in a few weeks, probably to beat VirtuaFighter5 to market, Tekken 5 will be available for purchase. Previews of Oblivion are looking better than the XBox360, graphics closer in nature to a high end PC. Things are slowly beginning to look up for the PS3.

I'm like you, I get tired of the nonstop PS3 bashing. Sure some of that is warranted; I know Sony could have handled the launch differently, and I know they handle exclusivity contacts differently than how Microsoft throws money at developers. My $.02

Avoid the new Sonic unless you liked Sonic Heroes and have a deep-seeded need for more. I love Sonic (I love Sega) but Sonic Team has put their best efforts into ruining him. If there's a demo, try it out (there's a demo for 360, but not much help to you)
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

About the Blastfactor multiplayer: It's like a $2 addon if you already purchased the full version.

I did see a review on gamespot about Sonic. (lukewarm) It's just that my wife has this huge thing for the Sonic of yesteryear. It does seem quite different. We will be sure to try a demo first.

One of the main reasons I bought my PS3 was for the BluRay player as well. Might as well take advantage of having a HDTV was my thinking...

Interesting comments about the Camcorder.

I really really want to buy Casino Royale on BluRay. You can pre-order on Amazon, it comes out March 13th I think.

Thanks for the PS2 links!

the greatest thing about the ps3 is the exclusive games.

DISCLAIMER: DON'T READ THE BELOW IF YOU ARE A PS3 FANBOY NOT DEALING IN REALITY.
hardware (other than the main cpu), software, online capabilities, price, the 360 is better.
All the game comparisons on the net with videos or screenshots prove the 360 looks and plays better.
blu-ray has teething issues, and isn't the best for games.
the ps2 is outselling the ps3 in japan.
If you think that the ps3's nvidia chip is better than the 360's ati chip, you need to check into drug rehab, for whatever sony crack you've been smoking.

dude, don't be a retard. We don't need more flamefests - Frobozz started this thread looking for good info from peers using the system, not morons who can't do anything other than start ****.

I have yet to figure out why people INSIST on bashing a thread when the person asking for something specifically said NO BASHING. IF anyone NEEDS to bash the PS3, just find a thread started by NeRve and pick it up there.

PerfectCr he wasn't asking for facts . .he's asking for comments from other people who has the system. Since Bozz already owns a PS3, why bring up something that's insignificant to him.

I'll be going to EB Games at lunch to pick up one of the classics games. I'll make sure to let you know what's on it and how it fares. I have a PS2. I'll be getting the PS3 later on in the year.

Frobozz, I just thought of something -

Sega put out a Sonic Mega Collection for PS2. If your wife is big into classic Genesis-style Sonic games, and if you don't have a Genesis handy, this is the next best thing:

http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/soni ... index.html

Also, the Sega Genesis collection has a ton of great classic games together. Altered Beast, all the Golden Axe games, Phantasy Star II, III, and IV, Flicky, Sword of Vermillion - just tons of stuff. Another great retro collection.

And to top it off, it's cheaper than standalone BR players, so that's evne better. I have nothing against the PS3 - I don't own one and don't plan to, but it's not a terrible piece of hardware - it's just immature in terms of software selection. Kinda like the 360 was a year ago.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

Frobozz is actually just looking for positive reviews of the PS3, not necessarily "good info". Like any console, there's going to be good things and bad things. I'm not sure it's the best idea to shut your mind from the negatives of a product, unless you want reassurance of your purchase. That being said, I will not say anything specifically negative about the PS3 as per OP's wishes.

I've heard Resistance is a pretty good game, and an exclusive for PS3 right?

I just heard a co-worker say to another that he picked up a PS3 for $250 from an online auction. That's a positive point if you are looking to buy one. (although negative if you have one and want to sell it)

The other positive point is that it's a cheap solution for a bluray player with some extra features.

straight up the ps3 and the 360 are very similar in every aspect. i mean its like he said she said lol blu-ray vs hd dvd, the cell vs xenon... the graphics are wicked close as is very thing else... the ps3 is a little immature now but that will change and the 360 will evolve as well, its all just choice like usual... i think sony and microsoft should just suck it up and develop a console together :o u know it would be amazing :D

btw i have a xbox 360 and prefer it over the ps3 but i plan on getting a ps3 eventually

Thanks Hizpanick.

I'm not even really looking for only positive reviews. Just positive talk for those that already have them, or maybe want one, or those whom have questions about it. I have not shut my mind to the negatives. In fact, I see people complaining about them all the time everyplace, so that's why I started this thread - to see if there are others like me that wish to discuss the merits or talk about games they like or want to try, etc. etc. The naysayers on any product are always the most visable and vocal, always. The negatives have already been discussed to death.

Everyone else, please take your negativity someplace else. Thanks.

Derfunk: That looks good, I'm going to look for it used at Gamestop, thanks.

Not a bash, just the facts.

except for the fact that i can go online with my PS3 and play games against my friends for free?

so far most of my friends have both systems (PS3 and 360) and all of us like the PS3 better for games that are released on both platforms. we all have sony Bravia LCDs, and the games just look more crisp, maybe it's the HDMI. and whatever anyone else says, blu-ray movies are off the hook!

don't get me wrong I dig my 360, and it definitely has a superior game library at the moment, but as a system, i like my ps3 better.

I've got Ridge Racer 7, Resistance, and a couple of demos. Ridge Racer is really fun, but the demo for Motorstorm is much more impressive. I think that game will be incredible. It looks like it will have the perfect mix of interesting level design and Burnout3-esque physics and interaction.

I just started playing Resistance for the first time a couple of days ago. I think the campaign seems pretty hard, but it may be that I just haven't played a console shooter in over a year and a half. Overall though, I like it a lot. Certain parts remind of Republic Commando (which is one of my favorite games), and the multiplayer aspect is very fun as well.

About the PSNetwork, I think it's been fine so far. It seems a lot better than Xbox Live on the original Xbox, but I haven't had much experience with the 360 reincarnation. From what I hear from my friends, there's more community-based interaction in terms of statistics and profiles, etc. I'm really not into that at all. I just want to be able to get into a game and find some people to play with.

Granted, the PSNetwork needs some work. I'd like to see a better storefront and interface for the downloads, along with a faster connection speed, and more demos.

the PS3 has the backwards compatibility thing down now, from what I've read...recent firmware updates have taken care of the jaggies, and very close to *every* title is supported. The 360 has limited compatibility and many games are pretty rough around the edges - Max Payne 1 and 2 are quite a bit choppier than they are on the first Xbox. When I played through them both over my Christmas break, I ended up borrowing my brother-in-law's original Xbox just for them to be playable.

The Motorstorm demo really is cool. I'm always crashing when I'm the motorcycle though, it's funny watching the guy going flying in the post-crash slo-mo action.

I wish they would allow you to do the downloads in the background, but it's not a huge deal. I would imagine it'll be addressed sooner or later.

Question: My PS3 is hooked to my Samsung DLP HDTV via HDMI, and then I have an optical audio cable running from my TV to my Yamaha receiver. The audio works fine when watching over-the-air HDTV broadcasts (I get multichannel output and it shows up that way on the receiver display). But when I'm in PS3 mode, I'm only getting 2 channel audio. I tried changing some settings under audio, but when I did that - I got no audio whatsoever - so I changed it back. There's some settings for PCM frequency or something, and I'm not sure what's what. Anyone got any idea what I'm talking about?

So then there is only one "high end" console (exluding Nintendo, as they cater to a different market), thereby creating a monopoly? And then the Microsoft/Sony console can sell at a price of $800, becuase there is no competition? Sorry, but no thanks.

l33t-g4m3r - that was uncalled for, and trolling as far as I'm concerned. Just so you know, you are on my watch list.

Everyone else - Unless you have something useful to add to the discussion (as per Frobozz's request).......don't post.

yeah i mean the market isnt already a monopoly because sony sells their console for almost that much. and even if that were to happen and they did jack up the price people wouldnt buy it. the ps3 is a perfect example

I'd get a ps3 if it was a bit cheaper over any other system because I had the first 2, and Im familiar and a fan of the genre of games and franchises like FF etc.

Traditional RPGs are among my favorite games period. Can't get those on my PC

If I had the money though, just for the games I'd go this road.

That is my reason as well.

FF is all I really play on the PS2 (and trying to play through XII over the last couple of months without online help).

I just bought the Capcom Classics for 1942/1943/Vulgari for $25 CDN. I see alot of quality time with the PS2 in the near future.

More than likely I'll get the PS3 sometime in November/December.
