What is the best company that makes LCD monitor ?

Sat Mar 10, 2007 2:54 pm

Hi

I want to know which is the best company that makes LCD monitor ? (for example samsung, LG, viewsonic or ....)

As I know, most LCD monitors can't display dark colors very well ? right ?
So, what is the contrast ratio that I should look for when I buy an LCD ? How good is 700:1 contrast ratio ?

Thanks in advance.

I'm going to second Samsung, although you can just check newegg's reviews to check up on specific models.

Thank you for your reply.

I want to ask you, will 700:1 LCD display dark colors as good as CRT monitors ?

I have friend of mine who have LCD with 500:1 contrast ratio, and I think it is horrible because it is so bright and it hurts my eyes when I look at it.
So, is there a big difference between 700:1 and 500:1 ?

depends on the monitor , I have a 940 t Samsung which has 1000:1 ratio.
This monitor has about the best display ive seen with most LCDs when set right.
He should turn down his brightness , mostly adjust it like you want , theres software that comes with most monitors just for that

It also depends on the person looking at the LCD screens as well. Some swear they can see "deep blacks" even with 500:1, but some will say they will never see it the same as their CRT monitors. It varies from person to person.

A CRT is basicly unlimited:1 contrast ratio. Thereby true black. With LCDs you need something like brightstor I think its named. With the backlight being able to be turned off in areas.

Brightness is a whole other thing. And you can turn that down!

FYI my 1707FP is at 35 and 2405 is at 0 (both out of 100). These things always come too bright.

I don't think you could go wrong with either of those two. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but, I think the Dell displays use Samsung LCD pannels. My parents have a few of he Dell 24" models. I've been quite impressed with them.

CRT currently is the best image technology available. The only real reason it has been made "obsolete" by LCDs is because of size and power consumption.

I'll hold witness that my 8800GTS on my Sony 19" with 8ms response time 700:1 contrast ratio looks like crap compared to my Geforce FX5200 on Gateway2000 EV700. It's not so much ghosting as not having perfect fluid pictures. You can always tell that it seems a little too jumpy, even with Vsync turned on. Compared to my Trinitron, no contest. I simply can't immerse myself in a game without the true blacks of CRT. Try running around when it's dark out and raining in Oblivion.. there's a night and day difference.

That being said, some people get headaches when staring at CRTs for too long. I really don't get this, but I always use LCDs at all-night LANs because they're easier on the eyes when you start to get tired.

Either way, my choice would be CRT because of the better picture and more resolution flexibility.

Unless you are a professional colourgrading artist. CRT is dead dead and long dead.

I thought that until I tried gaming on one again. Even compared to the high end LCDs I've tried nothing matches the fluid motion and perfect colors of a CRT..

I had a Viewsonic professional 19" CRT prior to getting a Dell 2407. CRT's have a great picture, but this Dell also has a nice picture and is much lighter and more compact. You'll be more than happy with an LCD monitor IMHO. I also think LCDs are easier on the eyes for extended viewing. I love gaming with a 24" screen.

I have a samsung 19" SyncMaster 940Bf.
For My budget this was a good buy and im very pleased with it.
I must admit that when watching TV through my tv card the black could be darker.
This could be somthing to do with all the colour correction features of the monitor trying to make the colour more 'natural' in apearance.
Unless you pay big bucks for an LCD CRT will be better image quality.
For most casual PC users including myslef LCD preformance is more then satisfactory.

Another insightful post from Shintai.

CRTs are still quite prevalent and offer contrast and resolution flexibility that LCDs do not. Period. If you value space and power consumption more than image quality, then by all means, get an LCD. Otherwise, a CRT is the better choice for pretty much anyone.

For a sizeable portion of the population the flicker in CRT is just too bad for their eyes. And within that portion there are those who can't really tell the difference.

It does vary from person to person. However, either because of the dwindling supply of CRTs or there are indeed more people being indifferent, LCD seems to be accepted more these days. The upcoming higher contrast ones and LED backlight models will be the next tech wave to come. I'm waiting for SEDs myself but these couple of enhancements for LCD panels may still prove useful after all.

For gaming, I think 95% of the market won't notice the difference in 'fluidity.' I myself don't. And I think having the widescreen and the larger field of view is worth taking LCD's over CRT's.

My post was a helluva lot more useful then Shin's "CRT is dead dead dead" drivel. And you don't really say anything new here, either. Flicker bothers some people, sure. That's why I said "pretty much" everyone, not everyone. You know I don't deal in silly absolutes, so take your long-winded chastising response elsewhere.

Color reproduction is still better on CRTs (assuming your CRT is well-calibrated) but these days only design professionals are willing to pay the premium for that. CRTs can adjust to multiple resolutions, of course, so that used to be a big deal for gaming, but these days most people can find a satisfactory solution by adjusting game settings and/or display settings (of course this may mean "scaling" or "black bars" which bother some people more than others). The one exception may be the largest (eg Dell 3007WFP) displays, which require more GPU horsepower than most people have (or can currently afford) to be used in their entirety.
SlyFerret wrote:

It actually varies, depending on the display. The Dell 2707WFP uses a Samsung LTM270M1 S-PVA panel whereas the Dell 3007WFP uses an LG.Philips LM300WQ1 S-IPS. Dell might use others, too, but Philips and Samsung are the dominant suppliers. Samsung, of course, only uses its own panels in its retail products.

But this is an important point: Samsung aside, many of the companies that sell LCD displays to the customer do not make the underlying panels: there are actually only a handful of panel mfrs. Once you set aside minor features (USB ports, variety of input connectors, etc) you may actually be looking at the same panel when you're comparing screens from two different companies. For example, the Samsung 215TW, NEC LCD2190UXp, Eizo S2110W, HP L2105, all use Samsung LTM210M2 S-PVA panel.

One important area that can vary is scaling electronics: particularly if you're watching movies or console games (where you have less control over the source resolution) you may see a significant difference on the same panel if the scaling circuitry is different.

Don't hold your breath: Toshiba's promised SED TV was nowhere to be found at CES this year, and the major mfrs are all tied up in lawsuits.
