I'm newbie too! =)
This was the first XF86 Install I ever made! LOL!
Well, go to
http://www.xfree86.org, select a mirror and download the files U want (12 of 'em must be downloaded... don't remember which ones but you will find that in the site, and the others are optional, like, fonts, and so)
Then U must put everything in a temp folder, but important, the folder must be in an ext2 or ext3 partition ... If you download it in Win2K for example, you must copy it to a ext partition even if you are able to read it from Linux...
Tech backgroud ... if you try to install XF86 from a FAT32 or NTFS partition the system won't be able to create some hard links and the stuff won't go...
Then, just type "sh Xinstall.sh" w/o quotes and follow the instructions... but IMPORTANT:
DON'T let the install app overwrite any configuration files or you will be in trouble! I didn't say NO to these questions in the first time I tryed to install and then I could't find Gnome or KDE ... startx would give me only a strange X session window ...
As I'm a newbie, I decided reinstalling Linux would be easier than reconfiguring it...
Any doubt, please write!

BTW, can you read your Win2K (NTFS) partition from Linux ??? If I try to mount mine WinXP (NTFS too) I get a message that says NTFS isn't supported by Kernel ... strange cause many people can mount theirs...
I've tryed
mount /dev/sda1 /mountpoint
and also
mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /mountpoint
the device is right, it's a Raid IDE controller...
Thanks!!
