I remember having issues with it at one point, but my exif viewer at the time may have been dodgy.

I use Opanda (it reads and understands more stuff that any other viewer I've tried), but the firefox extension for it was buggy at that time.

It looks like it could be, or it could be an optical illusion of sorts.

The A710 IS does have some barrel distortion at wide angle so that's a likely scenario. You can see a better example of it here, from the DCResource review of the camera.

So I got a Seagate 4GB Microdrive for $30. What are your thoughts on Microdrives -vs- flash? Is there anything wrong with using this Microdrive as the main storage in my RebelXT?

1. I know they're fragile, but I handle my camera and flash cards very gently. Always either in a case, card reader, or camera.

2. How much will my battery life be affected?

3. I know flash is 'faster', but I'm not sure what that means exactly. What can't I do with a Microdrive that I could with a fast flash drive?

Edit: Should this be moved to Storage forum?

I don't care for them because they're less robust and slower. Fragile doesn't just mean they react to bumps and such worse - they also have more ways to fail "spontaneously". That means once your buffer fills up you'll shoot less rapidly, and it'll take longer to transfer images to your computer. If you don't shoot a lot of shots in rapid succession and don't mind the transfer speed, performance is a non-issue.

Went to Butchart Gardens again today. Here's a few of the better shots I got off. The weather conditions weren't exactly ideal for photography.

No, I think the pic is from the 2004 transit of Venus. Googling "Baader Filter" (in the post's subject field) tells me that they're used in solar observations, and that sure looks like the Sun.

We ought to make it interesting and come up with monthly (or quarterly) photography assignments. Assignment examples could be wildlife, urban/architecture, plants and flowers, macro, etc. The possibilities are endless.

It might be a fun way for some of us to improve our photographic eye...

i still have a TON to learn. problem is.. there is also real life and real job.. and been busy.

also.. this thread is getting long.. almost time for a seperarte forum

perhaps with phpbb 3? subforums are nice.

We could always do separate threads for individual "assignments". A separate forum would be nice if we could make sure we generate enough traffic for it.

Not necessarily. You can still frame stuff get the same angles with P&S. Obviously the assignments wouldn't be to take a 10mm shot of a flower, but if it were to get a macro shot of a flower, I'd say that a P&S is fully capable of doing that, and even getting some blurred background effects.
I'd be up for something to develop my skills with.

Nah... Don't worry about that, just try to make the most of your hardware and have fun with the assignments.

As far as organizing the assignments, a new forum would be nice. If we end up generating enough traffic, it would be the way to go. Starting off, we could just start a sticky for every new assignment, and keep an index going in the latest sticky of the past assignments.

Like I said, I'd love to have a forum dedicated to photography, but I understand if the admins think it wouldn't be practical at this point.

*Edit: Just to run with what usacomp was saying, P&S cameras are very capable. You can capture some very nice images with em.

Yeah, P&S cameras can make great photographs, just not in all of the same situations that a more involved system can. No camera generates good composition in any case.
