Windows XP printer, windows 98 drivers?

Postposted on Thu Aug 16, 2007 6:52 pm

Hi guys,

Client bought a printer, and it works fine. Except there are no drivers for windows 98 that I can find. When I shared the printer out over the network, it asks for the INF file, naturally being no drivers disc for 98, it won't work.

Do I have any options to get those two windows 98 machines printing to it? It's a simple hp1420 printer.

Unfortunately, cheap inkjet printers are typically little more than the mechanical guts of a printer, with minimal onboard intelligence. Page images are actually rendered in the device driver (using the CPU of the PC) and sent to the printer as a raw raster image.

So if there isn't a Win98-specific driver for the printer, you're probably SOL.
Put those spare CPU cycles to good use -- fold!
just brew it!

Since Windows 98 is beyond it's end of life support nobody really has any reason to write drivers for it for new peripherals.

You only option would be to upgrade those two machines to XP.

I love it when clients buy hardware without my help. I especially enjoy trying to support hardware that I would have never spec'd out for them.

Guess I'm not the only one with this problem!

That sucks to hear, I guess I can just setup shared folders and they can walk to the main computer and print

Why are they on 98? If you can get them to even 2000 there is a much better chance you will be able to find a driver.
