What happened to the R&P forum?

Mon Aug 27, 2007 7:55 am

Please bare with me as I implement a change on how the R&P forum is run. I had hoped to give everyone a bit more warning and provide less of a downtime, but certain factors make it imperative that I do this now. New access to the R&P forum will be made available this morning.

Heh.

As I've hinted in various places around the forums, it's time for a change with regards to the R&P forum. The R&P forum will now be a self-moderated and an "opt-in" forum, i.e. it will be hidden to members that haven't explicitly agreed to join the user group. This is largely modeled on the Beyond3D R&P forum.

There are some differences, mainly due to the limitations of the phpBB software when compared to vBulletin. First, joining the user group requires me adding the user manually. I could have made it an open group that anyone can join, but I'd like to retain the ability to kick people out and I don't want people joining the forum just to post in R&P. Secondly, only I will have moderating permissions in the forum (along with the other admins, but I'm the only one who's actually going to read the forum).

To join the forum, hit up this thread but please, read the intro carefully. If you still want in after reading, then post in that thread. To discuss this change, post here in this thread.

To everyone that currently has quotes from the R&P forum in their signatures, those need to be changed. What happens in R&P is going to stay there.

If after a few months it seems like this isn't working, then we can try something else. But it seems to work well for Beyond3D.

So basically its like the R&P section of TG?

Are the word filter restrictions still in effect in R&P?

Judging from the thread Kevin linked to, I would say "yes". R&P is still a TR-run area of the site, so all normal rules still apply. It's merely the moderation that has been dialed back a bit.

More like moderation has been dialed back to almost zero.

The word filter is forum wide, I don't see a way of turning it off for a specific forum, otherwise I would have.

The version of phpBB TR is running doesn't allow the filter to be disabled for an individual forum. However, any attempts to work around the filter in the R&P forum will not result in a mod edit or reprimand.

Edit: Kevin beat me to it...

I should add that Mark "Ratchet" Thorne pioneered the basic "opt in/informed consent/mostly unmoderated" concept for a politics forum at a technology website when he was running Rage3D. Tho the B3D FAQ was authored by me.

So if you love it you can thank my FAQ. If you hate it, you can blame Ratchet. 8)

We at B3D tried various methods over the years; so far this seems to work well. For awhile we tried a heavy "laying on of hands" by staff to keep the place civil for wanderers by and visitors eyeballs who were otherwise shocked to find such a place at a technology website. . . but it just didn't work for us. The folks that frequent such places are too smart and good at intertwining gross calumny with legitimate commentary so tightly together as to make it impossible to moderate the former without opening the staff to accusations of trying to suppress the latter.

Anywho. . .good luck, fellas!

I clearly stopped surfing the web at the wrong time last night.

Augh, I need my R&P! I keep getting excited because the third forum from the bottom (not in SBR, although I should really get around to that one of these days) has unread posts, but it keeps being the DC Forum. :(
