I'd say that ASUS is a excellent brand and they make excellent motherboards for either side.

Well, certainly if you're not into overclocking or anything like that, a "plain" motherboard without any extras will do just fine. The other mobo makers are, in my opinion, better at giving you those extra features like RAID, 5.1 sound, better overclocking, solid state capacitors, etc.
So, yeah, Intel motherboards are just dandy in my book. ASUS, Gigabyte, etc. are fantastic mobo makers as well and are just as good as Intel's boards.
Of course you realize that Intel is the creator of the reference designs that the other manufacturers (ASUS, Gigabyte, etc.) base their designs off. Intel also is a
manufacturer of their own motherboards.
I'm sure I'm screwing up this explanation... oh well
