Gaming Monitor vs. HDTV

Mon Nov 19, 2007 4:29 pm

I want to upgrade my old HP Pavilion F70 17in LCD monitor, I've had it since about 2003/2004 now. But I want something I can both watch TV on and game on.

So which would be better, a gaming monitor that can do HD TV/movies or a HDTV that can do PC gaming?

And what are good suggestions for both in the 600-800 or so range? For HDTV which would be better for gaming and general TVing between plasma and LCD?

Also looking for something between 42in and 32in, maybe 22in but no lower. I'm browsing through CNET at the moment but anything the TR knowledgeables can provide would be appreciated.

Are you specifically looking for something with a tuner or are you planning on using a set top box for HD or some kind of PC tuner add-on?

I would recommend getting a Dell 2407WFP-HC. The monitor runs native at 1920x1200 and has a ton of inputs. It might be a little small but it's in your price range. If the monitor is bigger you have to start panning your head. Some people are ok with it but I personally can't stand it. So really it's just personal taste.

There are some bigger monitors like this one that have a good resolution. I don't know how well it works as a monitor though. I wouldn't get anything with a resolution lower than 1680x1050 though but that's just my opinion.

Edit: Neither of these will work as a tv unless you have a set top box.

Well I suppose I would like one that comes with a tuner or a PC tuner add-on if I have to buy one. I'm definitely not trying to set up a set top box though.

it depends on how sensitive you are to running a computer at low resolution. As mentioned a 24 inch dell runs at 1920X1200. A 32 inch or larger lcd in your price range is only going to be running 1366X768 yet it has much more screen area to cover with that lower resolution

I have my 2407 hooked up to our Dish Network HD-DVR and it runs TV like a champ (via HDMI @ 720p). It also plays my xbox 360 elite @ 1080p via HDMI. Looks great gaming and superb for HD-DVD's. I feed it a 1920x1200 signal from computer for occasional gaming.

It all depends on what size you want. How much text are going to be reading as opposed to TV viewing and such?

PS, I should also note that the monitor works great as a TV when using the Hauppauge HVR-1600 HD OTA tuner in my PC. 1080i football games are amazing.

Well. If I myself chose to replace my 2005WFP (inputs galore) with another LCD that was not a TV: I'd get the 27" Dell, not the 24". Same 1920x1200 resolution with various inputs for DVI/dsub/svideo/composite/USB.
But I'm not too familiar with the 1080i/p offerings.

Yeah I was looking at some of those Dells. Thanks for the input Usacomp and DrdillyBar. I will check those out. That Dell you have Usacomp according to cnet was supposedly a little bad at static images, what's your take on it. I mean I will need this to do some papers on it from time to time.
How's the Dell in regards to reading text?

I think I found a steal on that 2407:

Edit:
Also on the Dell site I saw this, similar to the 2407, even comes with HDMI connectivity, a faster response time, which would mean it would be better than the 2407 in terms of static image and motion blur or am I wrong?
I've found no reviews yet for this product. Anyone familiar with this monitor?

I find the text quite sharp, especially over DVI. Even over DSUB it's quite passable (my laptop doesn't have DVI out).
I wrote lots of code for my VBA class, and never had a problem at all, except for maybe having to turn my head to see the whole screen

The 2407-HC version should have slightly more accurate color reproduction than the 2407 that I have.

BTW, just a note, the 2407 won't take an interlaced signal (read: 1080i) over the DVI. This afternoon I switched to component from my HD-DVR and ran 1080i and it didn't look nearly as good as the 720p via HDMI/DVI. Just keep that in mind if you are going to hook something like the Toshiba HD-A2 up to it.
