Anyone owned the Dell 2407fpw before?

Fri Nov 23, 2007 4:29 pm

Those Dell 2407fpw LCDs looks sweet (makes my 19-inch look tiny). I was wondering if any of you guys owned one yourself and how you think it is?

Truer words could not be spoken. I'll take my 2407 to the grave with me....well, maybe I'd give it to my sister. I've never seen a girl get so excited about computer tech before.

I was given the choice of 20", 22", or 24" Dell LCD's at work. I choose the 20", the 24" is to big to see it all comfortably without pushing it off the back of the desk.

Nice monitor, makes a good TV, but to big.

What's Dell's Policy on Dead Pixels? If I was to get a 2407fpw with some Dead Pixels - could I exchange it? This is the one reason I have always previously bought my LCDs at B&M stores...

Once upon a time I got myself the 2407WFP-HC. Then there was nirvana.

not sure on their policy but my 2407wfp has 0 stuck/dead pixels. Its a pretty decent monitor, my main complaints are;

- pixel response is only "good enough", there are better monitors for FPS gaming if thats your main use. For movies, RTS or other uses the response wont be an issue.
- panels that are pre A04 revision have poor quality component inputs, A04 revision corrects this issue afaik. If you plan on connecting a game console youd want to use VGA or DVI (youd need to buy an hdmi to DVI adapter)
- there is only one dvi port, which can be annoying since its the only digital input option
- there is no hdmi port (HDCP is supported so you can convert an hdmi to source to dvi with an adapter), hdmi would be good for connecting a console or newer dvd player

I have both the 2407fpw and the 2005fpw 20-inch...I prefer the 24", but both work great.
Probably PUI. Definitely an كافر

After doing some reading I found the 2407fpw-HC REV A00 has a ton of problems (overdrive ghosting, colorshifting, etc...) I wonder if Dell has made any newer hardware revisions to correct them as they did with the non-HC models (A01, A02, A03, and A04)?

I love my dell 2407. Don't know the rev # (but it got replaced last...august maybe). The viewing angle is great for TV and stuff (That's what we have our Dish Network HD-DVR hooked up to).

I'm sitting in front of one right now. I'm giving serious thought to adding a 2407WFP-HC to my desk as well - these are truly great monitors.

They're not the best for gaming, but they're good enough that it hasn't yet bothered me. I'm not some kind of crazy gaming elitist anyway, I (gasp, shock, horror) even game with a wireless mouse.

Dell just came out with the E248WFP 24-inch widescreen (currently on sale for $399)

http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/prod ... u=320-6095

Considering the 2407fpw-HC is still around $500, can anyone tell me what's this difference between the 2407fpw-HC and this E248WFP (non-Ultrasharp model)...

No height/rotation adjustment. 6-bit instead of 8-bit. No Component, s-video or Composite inputs. Only DVI and db15.

Wow - I guess 2407fpw-HC is the winner... I am still waiting for them to go down even more - with 24-LCDs below $300 during Black Friday, I'm still having a hard time swallowing $600 for a monitor...

Crappy TN-based 24" LCDs below $300. They're hardly comparable.

You might want to look the Samsung 244T or 245T as well; they are S-PVA also but use the newer Samsung <a href="http://www.samsung.com/global/business/lcdpanel/productInfo.do?upper_fmly_id=603&fmly_id=609&partnum=LTM240M2">LTM240M2</a> panel (the Dell uses the Samsung LTM240M1-L01). No LED-backlit option yet AFAIK. XBit has <a href="http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/other/display/lcd-guide-f2007_5.html#sect0">reviews</a> of all except the Dell HC.

So if I get a panel with a LTM240M2 panel, does it mean it's even better than the 2407fpw-HC? (I know the 2407fpw are essentially repackaged Samsungs)

BTW - in this review it says both the 2407fpw and the 244T are the same panels

No. The LED backlight gives more contrast and color gamut.

Dell often switches panels, and even panel vendors, without changing the model number. I don't know if Samsung is till even producing the older panel, so it may Dell has switched over to the LTM240M2 or LTM240L2 -- and what you get may depend on where you buy (eg Europe vs US) and how long the stock has been sitting around.

So the 2407fpw-HC models with 92% NTSC gamut are LED-backlit? Or are they still using the older backlighting?

None of those feature LED backlighting yet.

Edit: It's LED not LCD.

What other kind of backlight would an LCD monitor have than an LCD backlight? A projector backlight?

Is there an advantage to using LED backlights aside from ahieving a slimmer profile? Which is why they're being used in laptops.

I could imagine how they can turn off LEDs selectively to improve dynamic contrast (I remember reading about 1 HDTV that does this), but I don't think any PC monitors have implemented this.

In theory, LEDs don't have flicker, but in practice, CCFLS used in monitors refresh at 180Hz which is undetectable to the human eye.

When I bought my 2001FP, they were very good about being sure i have the Monitor i wanted. At one point i had 3 2001FP on my desk at one time to pick my fave. (they cross ship the monitors when you're exchanging)

Brighter cleaner whites in comparison to CCFL. There is an NEC that uses LED's but it's in the price range of about 2 grand.

I think the industry standard is 5. If you have less than 5 they won't exchange. But since I've last checked this close to 4 years ago, things may have changed.

Dead pixels never bothered me with my 2001FP. I have 3 dead pixels which I found out using some program from the web but since it's a 1600x1200 screen it's very hard to tell where they are unless screen is uniform dark color and you are specifically looking for them. Have been using this screen for almost 4 years and haven't thought much about those pixels.

Yep (read the title of that page carefully for a little laugh). In practice, it's been a while since this dead pixels were much of an issue. There was a time when I wouldn't consider buying an LCD I couldn't turn on and test first, but lately you just don't run across many panels with even a single fault.

Apart from better contrast, power consumption is another factor which is more important on laptops. Every bit helps on the desktop too I guess.
