Would this be considered a Mod?

Thu Feb 07, 2008 12:10 pm

Here is my case. I have just registered for the TR forums today. I have been reading this site on the daily for years now. I just never bothered to register. So this is my Computer. Its a P4 920. OC'd to 3.08G, ASUS P5NSLI (570i), 4 GB Corsair Value Select DDR2 667, 2X LeadTek 8600GT 256M, SB Audigy 2, PCIe Gig Ethernet card, CHeezie Bluetooth adapter, 250Gb Data Drive (SATA), 160Gb OS Drive (SATAII), 2x DVD-RW, 52 in 1 card reader, MS Laser mouse 6k & Kbd. Its Water cooled using a Zalman WB4 on the CPU, a Swiftech MCW30 on the north bridge, 2X Zalman GWB3 on the cards. I am using my backup pump I removed from a unused home made hydroponics kit I made a few months ago. Its really wimpy I have to have the whole system empty or bled to get it to work. My last pump a Lowes special 240Gph pond pump was sweet until it ate it. It would blow anything out of the system, and as you can see the distance up is pretty substantial. Since my Youtube videos I have added a Ford heater core to the system. It works awesome. I have a box and 120mm fan around it and it is stashed in the cupboard next to my computer (water cooled for silence rather than cooling). It brought my ambient temperature down from 100f idle 109f load for the cpu, 115f on the graphics cards, To: 65f idle 75f load on the cpu. I forgot to get the temperatures of the graphics cards because I was super pissed at Microsoft and went to Ubuntu 7.10, which btw kicks major butt. I am using what I believe is a half gallon pickle jar as my reservoir now. I have kicked the bucket(see videos). any how, here are the links for the youtube video. This is still a work in progress. I am planing on making a nice radiator box with some new 120mm (not new but different, out of an 80's vintage sun enterprise server) and a 3 fan fan bus. I am also in the market for a new pump. I am looking for good large diameter round steel stock (8" +) to make a good sized reservoir out of. The ultimate goal is to quit messing with this one and create rev. 2. I have it all planed out. just need those drops of inspiration to get the next one pushed out.

Still, amazing to see the work into that.

Anyway here's some pictures of my Cosmos with its A8N-SLI.
Only real "mods' done to it are ripping off that goddamn irritating chipset fan that would intermittently fail for no adequatly explained reason (I'd have to start it spinning with a pen and hope the mechanism started up) and putting on a passive zalman chipset / gpu cooler. I'm not sure it's even visible in the pictures as I focused more on how few cables there are

Also, my PSU being janky, i needed to use a cable extender I lifted from work on my 20 pin atx connector as well as my 4 pin connector from my PSU. The cosmos is... large.

The behemoth. For an effective guage of size, my keybpoard tray is whats sticking out on the left
Image

The ever important front panel. What the picture does not show is that those LEDs are bright enough to interrupt my sleeping patterns, so for late night folding while I sleep I pull the ipod dock over them [ipod removed, of course]
Image

The inside, from a strange angle:
Image

Upper area of the mobo, while the "gpu duct" is still in place. After this pic I grabbed a can of dustoff to get rid of the disgusting mess on top of those capacitors and heatsink. Using zipties to attach to the e-ATX holes will come back and bite me when i buy a new motherboard. The RAM, for those curious, is two 1024 sticks and two 512 sticks [arranged in accordance to getting dual channel to work]
Image

Vent removed for a view of a Galaxy 8800GT. The blue thing just beneath it is the aftermarket chipset cooler, and the SATA ports are two hard drives, optical, and my front panel eSATA. The lone PCI card is for wifi. It didn't fit properly (stupid linksys) and is ziptied in. There's also nothing quite as satisfying as looking at empty IDE and floppy ports
Image

About as restricted as airflow gets in this case
Image

This was actually the first time I opened the case while it was on (folding no less) and the cpu temp dropped a good five degrees while it was open, but was significantly louder [likely due to my overclocked CPU on stock cooler under full load]. That said it is still nice and chilly [right now 60c under load @ 2.5ghz]

I really like those "Cosmos" cases. They remind me a lot of the Mac Pro i think it is. I am very much attached to my Dual G5 Mac here at work.

new internals shot, changed pretty much every part except the case since the last one. Unfortunatly my 8800GT is no longer with us. I'm considering burying it in the back yard. Also the Cosmos's thermal gpu duct thing [not pictured, wanted to show off hardware because I'm vain like that] actually does chill a couple degrees off the gpu [and wherever the thermal sensor is on my motherboard]

My cable management isn't as good, but they're pushed to the back so they dont impede airflow.

I modded a thermaltake tai chi to carry a 120.3 radiator off the back for my 'main rig' that I built in 2005 and still use to this day..

prepping a brace for the rad/fan assembly
Image

the inside, showing off the dual watercooling loops.. a week after this shot I got another 7800 GT and put it on the same loop as the other video card.
Image

the back.. complete with duct tape holding a wire down :)
Image

specs:

Asus a8n sli deluxe, chipset cooled by dangerden waterblock
Amd 3800+ X2 s939 stock 2.0ghz, runs at 2.6ghz constantly @ ~25 C under load cooled by swiftech cpu block
2gb pqi turbo ddr400
2x300gb seagate drives in Raid0 for game installs and media
1x120gb seagate drive for windows, linux, and vista OS installs
1xXFX 7800 GT 256mb @ 500mhz (stock = 425)
1xBFG 7800 GT 256mb @ 500mhz (stock = 425)
1xATI 9000 PCI - when I have the two 7800 GTs in SLI I'd lose my other two monitors without this card.
SB Audigy2 Platinum EX
Magnum XG 650watt modular power supply
coolermaster digital fan controller keeping all 6 fans running slowly enough to be almost silent

main WC loop:
DDC 12V pump
3/8" ID tubing for CPU and mobo
120.3 thermochill radiator
3 evercool 120mm aluminum fans all outside the case

vga loop:
thermaltake bigwater radiator, pump, 1/4" tubing and 5.25" reservoir
2x coolermaster vga blocks with copper memory heatsinks
120mm fan under the case sucking in cool air and pushing it through the rad

other fans:
1x120mm blue led fan in the front for the hard drive cage
1x120mm blue led fan in the back for system exhaust

No, it's just a ATX motherboard mounted upside down and facing, what would classically would be, the back panel. A few cases use this, though Lian Li has used it in their large high end cases for awhile now.

Too bad Lian Li decided to scrap the whole inverted ATX on all their new cases. This was a modified OEM V2000 case for Tagan called Black Pearl.

May I suggest removing the stickers from your monitor and the shrink wrap from your case? Both would go a long way in making your set up look much nicer.

Here's a few shots of my rig inside my slightly modded cm690.Mainly I just made a few extras holes for better cable management and removed the front grill.IT's only purpose was to look good and obstruct airflow in a classic case of form over function. Also removed the extra medal guards behind the drivebays that were not being used. But with the adjustments and some fairly nice cable routing if i do say so myself, My system hovers around 26-31c idle and rarely going over 41c load. That,s for both the main board and cpu.My systems in my sig.

Recently got a new Sandy Bridge build up and running (2600K, ASUS P8P67 PRO) inside a Corsair 600T. I love all the space, and the cable management is awesome. Had to open it up the other day in order to move my drive connectors over to the unaffected 6Gbps SATA ports and took the opportunity to snap a shot.
