Another college coach goes bust in the NFL

Wed Dec 12, 2007 10:15 am

It's pretty sad that colleges are willing to hire these guys after they bail on a college team to go live the big life in the NFL only to wash out after a few seasons (or in the case of Petrino, not even a full one). The worst is when they profess that they won't leave or aren't even considering leaving, only to leave as soon as possible (like Saban last year).

You gotta wonder if things would have been better for him if Vick played this year.

I don't think you can put this failure completely on his shoulders, he had a lot of stuff to deal with for a first year NFL coach.

I'm blaming him for quiting. And lying about not quiting. I don't blame only him for the Falcons being 3-10.

Here are some more good articles:

EDIT: Also, my real complaint is that colleges are so quick to hire these guys back. And pay them millions of dollars.

It's not like he hasn't bailed or attempted to bail on teams before. He's a regular Larry Brown.

I'm torn. Part of me is pumped for the 2008 season to start. However, the other, more annoying side of me (call it my logical side) can't stand for the 2009 season to roll around because we might be looking for another head hog down at the trough by the time that campaign begins. It seems like everytime you look up, Coach Petrino is flirting with another school.

If I had to guess why he left early to come here, I'd say recruits. It's all about timing and stability with recruits, and we need recruits in the worst possible way.

Or to hire NFL coaches in general -- that enormous ball of lipids that swallowed the Notre Dame program springs to mind. Coaching in college is a very different job, and a lot of NFL coaches suck at it (just as a lot of college coaches don't make the transition the other way).

My bad. I thought you were insinuating that the Falcons being as bad as they are was the reason for Paterno's departure.

Which is why it is so hypocritical that NCAA allows coaches to bail and go where they want but the players they leave are forced to sit out a year if they decide to go somewhere else. But then again, it is the NCAA I'm talking about.

All coaches should be required to have a buyout clause in their contracts to discourage this sort of thing.

Not that I am a Falcons fan, but dang if you didnt sign a contract. And to leave before the end of the season....I mean....WTF!? He is not the only one just the latest.

Vick really had nothing to do with it. Petrino is a job hopper.

After seeing Roddy White's retarded "Free Vick" shirt or whatever he was wearing, I'd distance myself from that team as much as possible.
