I installed ubuntu 7.10 several weeks ago using Wubi, it has been working well, however today it crashed, and when I tried to reboot I got the error, this all occurs before I even see the ubuntu loading bar:
find --set-root --ignore-floppies /ubuntu/install/boot/grub/menu.lst Error 17: File not found
it then offers a prompt with a list of files, commandline, halt, and reboot, none of the listed files work, and I get this error no matter how many times I restart, I have followed the instructions found here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WubiGuide#head- ... aca70cb88c and I am still having the same problem, does anyone know what the problem is or how to fix it, any help would be greatly appreciated

NOTE: This is a repost of something from the ubuntu forums, no one has responded there, and without access to my OS I am in desperate need of help.

In Windows, open My Computer, right-click on the icon for your drive C:, go to Properties, go to the Tools tab, and click the Check Now button under Error Checking. Maybe there's a filesystem error that Windows didn't catch.

It looks like Wubi works by creating a file on your Windows partition, creating an entry in Windows' boot manager, and mounting that file as a virtual hard drive, upon which Ubuntu is installed.

I ran that(I have also run CHKDSK /f without the gui), and I have defragged, that doesn't seem to work, someone suggested that I backup the virtual disks, than reinstall wubi and replace the virtual disks, this makes sense since it appears the problem is external to linux, any idea?

Looking at C:\wubi\disks\ I don't see anything, I assume that is bad, especially since I didn't delete anything, suffice to say it it up and deleted all my stuff I am going to be very mad.

If the file c:\wubi\disks\system.virtual.disk doesn't exist (look to see if it's a hidden or system file; probably easiest to open cmd, cd to that directory, and type dir/a) then yes, your installation is gone.

Well, nothing there, I am very annoyed right now, is there any possible way to recover those?

Maybe. You can find an undelete utility (I don't know of any free ones, but they might exist) and run it on that directory, but parts of it may or may not have already been overwritten with other data.

It looks like the Ultimate Boot CD for Windows has a couple free ones. Download the UBCD4Win installer from their website (http://www.ubcd4win.com) to a different computer and follow the instructions to create and burn the live CD, then boot your affected box with the CD. The tools in question are "Recovery Manager", "Handy Recovery", "Free Undelete", and maybe "File Recovery". Good luck.

I would suggest that, if you want to continue using Ubuntu after this all shakes out, you just use a standard Ubuntu install CD to partition your disk and install on the new Linux partition. At least then you won't be screwed if Windows messes things up.

edit: I bought a for-pay undelete util a couple years ago: DiskInterals Uneraser. It works pretty well.

In future I will use the full Ubuntu, I hadn't realized Wubi was prone to delteing itself :-?

Hrm, it appears that UBCD requires you to have your windows installation disk which I don't have handy, do you know of any alternatives?

Sorry, no. See if a friend will let you borrow his Windows XP SP2 or SP1 install disc. Note that there are special instructions for using Dell CDs since they are missing a few files.

Heh, right now it's at a friends house, I'll just hop by tomorrow and pick it up(long story short, I built a PC for his cousin, I left the windows disk in when I shipped it to him, and his cousin shipped the CD back to him a few days ago)
