New Shuttle-ness! y44y!

Tue Feb 05, 2008 4:43 pm

Hello. I am new here (long time lurker though, this site is awesome) I am a software developer located in Boston, and my current machine is a SN25P/FX-57. I'm looking to grab a SX38P2 and toss this in there:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6819115037

Any ideas/comments/suggestions? Thanks!

Welcome to the fold!...um, sorry...I mean, Welcome to TR. But if you feel like folding, you can do that too.

As nice as it is, nothing much has changed from the previous P-series chassis revision... needing more screws (rather than the previous more-tool-free setup) is a bit odd, but probably done as a cost-cutting measure. :)

Yeah that was one thing I didn't like, return of the screws. Oh well, It's a small price to pay I suppose for leaving the single core world behind finally. I'm hoping my X1900XTX still plays games well. It seems to do fine with everything but Crysis.

I used to fold, and you know it was fun, but for two reasons I'm not going to fold this time. One, I went through Shuttles pretty fast doing it (heat output?) and then theres the power use. I just bought my own place so I don't need any additional bills just yet :)

I can sympathize with that. I've been wanting to build a shuttle system for a while and I'm certain that I would probably not use it for folding, myself. Simple HTPC for me is all that I would need.

Shuttles are nice.

Just sold one, gave two away and have three in my house.

So, yes, they are very nice.

But not for the "faint of heart" however....

All the crap showed up. I've never been so excited by technology before. This is like the sickest system build I've done yet. I actually ordered 2 more GB of ram for a total of 4 due to the $40 rebate :o The FX38 motherboard is absolutely gorgeous. its all solid state caps and shiny copper tubing. Plus Shuttle did a great job with cable management this time (unlike with my SN25P before it) I can barely see any cable clutter. I take back what I said about the screwdriverless install. The screw down HDD carriers are much more sturdy than the old clip in ones from the SN25P.

Post some pics of your new baby!

Sure I'd love to. I don't have a processor yet. I am still debating between Q6600 G0 and an E8400. Although I guess it doesn't need to function for me to take pics. lol.

I have been trying to get an E8400 for a while to toss in this but they're out of stock everywhere. Microcenter had them listed at $200 at one point. That's a sweet deal. I hope I can get it to 3.6 Ghz with Shuttle's kick ass cooler and the X38.

So here they are at last....pics. The old SN25P has found a good new home. My new Sx38P2 has 4 GB of Corsair PC6400 in it and my old X1900XTX. The CPU is a temporary one, a Celeron dual core 1.6 Ghz / 512Kb cache, and I'm sure that will be the first and last time anyone uses one of those with a X38 chipset :)

ugh....I just learned I may be waiting a while for the E8400's. Grrr. Does anyone have advice for overclocking this on a X38? I would like a 400 mhz bus, 1600FSB effective I think. And I have DDR2-800, so I want that to match the bus. The X38 Bios has settings to change cpu multiplier, CPU Clock, and memory divider ratio.

Sweet. I've always wanted a decent SFF (got one for free.. needed a bit of work, then got a laptop, etc.). This makes me want to start some Newegg builds! :)

Sweet. They're fun. I've done quite a few of these, so let me know if you need any help or advice. And post pics when you're done!!

New builds are always fun. Congrats on the new build. I'm looking forward to building an SFF soon. New computer parts make me giddy.

You've got it all wrong a shuttle should look like this once you're finished with it!

Image

As you can see you buy a double slot GFX with HDMI so it runs silently. Do a normal DVD install and then an Audaicy 4 SFX required for SPDIF HDMI audio pass through, I went with the no screw 5 1/4 mount... so it kind of just sits there on top of the case allowing gravity to take care of the details. Notice my imaginative use of cabling to finish off the perfect HTPC setup.

That's awesome. Will I become part of The Collective if I come too close to it?

Some would call it an Aopen XC Cube EZ482 Black S939, as far as I'm concerned it's me 'Borg Cube'

So all I need for this thing now is a hard drive. I want one of the WD Caviar 640MB ones, or perhaps two, if RAID would help me any. Anybody have one of these yet? Also I found that I need to manually set the memory voltage and timing on the Corsair XMS PC6400 I have. I set tCAS, tRcd, tRp, and tRAS to 4, 4, 4, and 12 respectively and set the voltage to 2.1v. Once I have a HDD for this bitch I'll toss Win XP 32 SP2 on it and cross the fingers. I'd really like to play UT3 and Crysis, though so I'll need a new video card soon.

I have been running this new system for a while now, and I opened it up today to check temps. With my hand, I tested the hard drive, Northbridge, and cpu coolers. The cpu and HD seem fine, as well as the cooler on the Power MOSFETS. What I am worried about is the large copper HS cooling the x38 chipset. This is so hot I burned my hand on it after 2 seconds of touching. Is this normal? It's running the FSB at 1.6 Ghz, which is a 17% overclock from the max rated 1.33 Ghz FSB, I believe. And it has two channels of DDR2-800 connected to it, at 4-4-412. That doesn't seem like it's way out of spec or anything. Anyone? Bueller?

You might have better look if you post that comment in the OverClocking forum.
