DLP Bulbs

Mon Mar 03, 2008 2:31 pm

Wow...talk about price disparity!! My DLP tv is starting to dim a bit and taking longer to light up than id like so i went looking for bulbs today. For the same bulb some sites charged as much as 300 bucks..man my rectal cavity got really tight when i saw that. After scads of sites and searches i finally found one for 110 bucks shipped. Anyone who has a DLP set would do themselves a favor by doing an exaustive search cuz not all of like quality and price.

Yeah, if you pay retail for a bulb you're gonna get raped.

Out of curiosity, how long did your bulb last you?

I had a panasonic LCD projector the bulbs where 300 dollars, I replace 3 in about a year and a half. Sold it for a hundred bucks, and yes he new about the bulb problem. If I was to get one now I would get one of those LED DLP's. I think samsung makes one.

Are they easy to replace?
My Samsung DLP is a little a year and a half old.
May I ask what reseller you found that had the best deal?

Last I heard those LED DLPs had hotspotting, color, and geometry issues. I'd avoid until Samsung works those issues out.

Just one more reason I like my rear projection CRT no bulbs to burn out.

Well, rear projection CRTs start dying the moment you turn them on, and once they're done they're done. You can increase the life of the phosphors in that CRT set by ensuring your contrast and brightness settings are correct, but once it starts to dim you've got to junk it. With microdisplays you just pop in a new bulb and it's like you have a new TV.

I have no idea on the life span of them but if they are even close to the life span of a regular CRT it will be a long long time before I have to worry about that.

Depends on your contrast/brightness settings but they usually dim noticeably at about 10,000 hours. I've a 7 year old RPTV upstairs that's still plenty bright, but I've never run it in "torch" mode.

I agree with you. For all the advances that you get with DLP HDTV, the fact that you gotta buy and change a bulb is a huge turn off.
Same thing with projectors, which is why I sold mine.

I'll be happy with my 50,000 LCD, a well engineered proven solution. Just check out all the laptops and desktop LCDs still running after years and years of use.
LED back lighting will only make them better.

The bulb on my SXRD set is rated for 8,000 hours. I'll probably replace the set before I replace the bulb.
