Is sharing a console code universal for all multiplayer, or do I need a separate Brawl code, a separate Animal Crossing code, etc?

depends on the game. If a game has a game-specific code (such as Brawl, MKWii, and AC) you'll need the game-specific code AND both people need to enter each others'. It's annoying.
