Should I keep it?

Thu Feb 28, 2008 2:04 pm

Or throw it back?

I ordered a 2007fp (1600x1200) NIB from a store on ebay last week for $305 shipped. Today DHL delivered a NIB 2007wfp rev AO4 (1680x1050). Should I contact them and get the right monitor, or did I just luck out with a better monitor? I had a 2407wfp-hc briefly but decided I didn't want or need to spend $700 on a single monitor when I could get two 2007fp (and thus more screen space) for less. I plan on adding a second display sometime in the future. I do not game at all - just want the screen space for coding and having ftp voyager and sql yog open and on the screen at the same time.

It all comes down to do you want the widescreen or not?

I personally would rather have a bigger then 20" widescreen OR a couple 20" 4:3 monitors.

Check for dead pixels and run some gradient tests. Find out what panel type it is (I'm lazy to google but you can find it) and if it is S-IPS, sell it or just enjoy the awesome colour reproduction.

Or if you can haggle a difference refund out of them, but yeah, the 2007FP is more expensive.

I didn't do any home work, I thought the OP said this monitor was better and that perhaps this was a moral choice of keeping something better that he didn't pay for?

You've been bamboozled. You need to exchange that monitor for the correct one or get a refund, ASAP.

1680x1050 = 1.76 MP
1600x1200 = 1.92 MP

"eBay" is leet-speak for "caveat emptor."

I emailed the seller at 5:43 asking them to send me the correct monitor. Seven minutes later they responded! They're going to send out the 2007fp tomorrow. If they really pull through with this, I will be extremely impressed.

I dont know how much the panels have changed but I have a 2001FP and love it. You made a good choice getting rid of the wide screen.

I had a pair of 2001FPs at my last GIS job for the state of MN and they were outstanding monitors. There were a couple threads over at DigitalWeddingForum that were praising the 2007FP for its great color reproduction:price ratio.

I had both the UltraSharp 2000FP and the 2001FP. The 2000FP was slower and lacked a rotating stand, but I preferred its image quality to that of the 2001FP. I passed the 2000FP on to my mom over a year ago. It was just a few months after that that I got my current monitor. When I'm in a dual-monitor kind of mood, I can turn the 2001FP 90° beside my main monitor to make a handy 3760x1600 desktop.

The seller shipped a return shipping label via DHL today and told me to expect my monitor Tuesday or Wednesday. I am impressed.

I personally would have preferred the widescreen over the 4:3, but that's just me. There is something for getting what you paid.

Yeah it really depends on what you like. I am just the opposite I dont care for wide screen monitors. A good part of that is the fact that when I look at a 20 inch wide screen I dont think it is anywhere near tall enough. To me wide screen monitors seem like you chopped the top off a perfectly good 4:3 monitor to change the aspect ratio

For gaming, (fps') I prefer the perspective since it's more natural. For movie watching, well that one's obvious. For general purpose, as long as the screen is 900px tall or so, I don't know that any more is a significant improvement. (my laptop is 1440x900, my previous 2 were 1280x800. My wife's laptop is 1280x800. My wife's desktop is a 2005fpw, so 1680x1050. Our TV, and a laptop hookup is a 2407, so 1920x1200. The only non-WS is a 19" Mac Studio Display LCD which is a 1280x1024 panel, and I only have that because I got it from work.

I'm completely blown away by the service of the seller of this monitor. A shipping label is en route to return the 2007wfp along with the 2007fp -- great service. Most places would make the buyer pay return shipping for a mistake the seller made. That's nothing though compared to the email I just received from this seller. They just refunded my paypal account the full $305 I paid for the monitor, citing "they feel more comfortable refunding me until I get the correct monitor."

So let's recap: Come Monday, I will have a 2007fp, a 2007wfp, and $305. Unbelievable.

To be totally truthful, I honestly couldn't care about monitor ratios. I was happy on a 21" CRT (4:3), and I'm happy on my 24" (16:10). I figured the industry was going that way, so I might as well hop on board now, and get it over with. That being said, having had to work on a number of papers this year for university, the wide screen was a big bonus in being able to put up two documents/web pages side-by-side. Of course my dual 17"'s a couple years back could do that too.

So I do agree with you on principle, but is that reality knocking at your door? (I kid I kid)

I'd say keep it, and eventually get the 2007FP and run the wide in landscape or portrait mode.

I don't think I could go back to regular 4:3 monitors. I like my 906BW too much.

The UltraSharp 2408WFP or UltraSharp 2407WFP-HC can rotate 90° on their stands. Change your Windows properties, and you've got a tall and narrow 1200x1920 display for working on large pages of text. If your widescreen LCD monitor doesn't include a pivoting stand, you can accomplish it with an aftermarket monitor support arm. Thanks to the VESA mounting standard, you don't have to rely on your monitor's manufacturer to provide the support hardware.

I knew this seller's service was too good to be true. They sent me a return shipping label on March 3 as promised, but no new monitor. I waited for about a week for the correct monitor to show up, but it did not. I've sent three emails to the seller simply asking if I should expect it to arrive, but haven't heard back on any of them. Luckily, my credit card was refunded, but I'm pretty upset about all of the hassle.

I'm guessing that the person who ordered the 2007wfp got my 2007fp and realized that they got one heck of a deal. I don't blame them at all! It sure would be nice if the seller would just respond to attempts to contact them. I think I can safely assume now that I'm not going to get the monitor, but I'd hate to have it show up one day after I've spent another $300+ on a monitor and then either be expected to pay for it or send it back. NO thank you.

Back to ebay in search of a monitor....

Well I prefer widescreen much more than a 4:3 monitor. I think the whole purpose of widescreen is that it keeps a greater amount of natural viewing area for the human eyes which are side by side, not above and below. Same reason a movie theater is widescreen and not square, its more natural IMO. Also I think that height isn't as important, but only because (the way I see it) - while gaming its much more helpfull to have a greater horizontal vieweing area than vertical, id rather see a greater amount of a creepy corridor from left wall to right wall than I would care to see of the floor and ceiling.

But its a matter of opinion, and Ive been using a 17" 4:3 for 4 years for plenty of gaming, ive only been using a widescreen monitor for about a week and thats what I think of it
