9800GX2 comes in 33.6% faster than that 3870 X2.
worse at price/performance though.

I like the ATI design better, hope the HD 4xxx series kicks some butt.

If the HD 4870 were 50% faster than 3870, then the X2 version should be able to recapture the overall crown.
.. and if its more than 50% faster, they should be able to make things interesting.

ATI does need to drop the prices a bit more on the 3xxx series.

i use newegg for pricess across the board for consistency... and general laziness

plus, its still easy to look at the numbers and then go look where you usually shop or anywhere else you can find a better deal and figure it out.

What do you think about adding in SLI/Crossfire data?

It seems like double the work, but you could limit this additional data to non-budget (nothing sub-Radeon 3850, for example) since dual video cards aren't for those with relatively shallow pockets.

The reason I bring this up is that I've been noticing that two 9600 GTs in SLI performs very well when compared to a G92 8800 GTS or 9800 GTX in ~2MP resolutions. The top end G92s destroy the SLI 9600GTs at 3MP resolutions. The pricing for 2 9600 GTs is very similar to that of a 8800 GTS or 9800 GTX, depending on specific brands you choose. My read through of Damage's GeForce 9 extravaganza was what really brought this to my attention.

There are very very few cases where SLI would be worth it. Right now I can think only of one: 2 x 8800GTS instead of 1 x 9800GX2. Other than that, makes no sense. There's also the corner case when somebody wants a set of cards faster than the fastest single card available, but even then, there's the 9800GX2 once again and SLI doesn't really scale beyond two cards.

Wouldn't you first line be enough? ;)

This is my latest attempt. I may have missed some points in there though. I clearly remembered I made a "hooked like drugs" reference before. Anyway, it's only about 15K posts to search. Shouldn't be that hard, right? :P

Search found 492 matches: sli

Your latest rant didn't mention all of the reasons why the "buy one now, get one later" scheme is a failure. You mentioned the unavailability of the EOL'ed 6800GT, but you didn't mention obsolesence. By the time that you're ready to get a second card to make things run faster, there's a new card available that not only runs faster, but also includes additional features and capabilities not included with your old card. You're not going to want to buy a second obsolete card to be (a little bit) faster (in those games that benefit from SLI), you're going to want the latest generation card to get more capabilities.

Re: AMD (ATI) vs Nvidia performance redux

wow.. I'm going to have to re-calc the entire top end now.

with the new games in there.. and whatever other changes were made (drivers?) the new round of updates is going to move the entire NVidia line down compared to the ATI counterpart. For example, I did a preliminary comparison with the HD 3870 as base and it comes out as so on the new review:

9800 GX2....949.49
GTX 280.....874.79
GTX 260.....752.68
3870 X2......698.98
9800 GTX....578.86
HD 3870......502.04

The 3870 X2 went down quite a bit relative to the HD 3870 as well.. due largely to Race Driver game.
Assassins Creed helped the ATI scores.. considering there are 6 games .. one game can make a significant impact.

It will take me a while to recalc everything.. I'll probably wait for the HD 4850 and HD 4870 reviews here on TR since it's also going to entail recalcing some of the old scores to make things match up again. ugh.

I think this thread should be constantly updated to keep up with new cards and pricing. Its a sticky, so it needs updating.

updated.
GTS 512 will be added soon.
--------------
My plans are to switch to an image (screenshot of the spreadsheet) to make things easier to read for at least the top cards.
.. also another reason for this is so I can color code the cards that were calculated from the same reviews.. so it's easier to figure out which scores are more "accurate".

This is a fantastic thread/idea. Please keep this list updated, because - even if the figures are not 100% accurate - simply as an indicator of relative performance it is invaluable. Particularly for somebody like me, who stuck an x800xt in his '04 build and then switched off the graphics cards channel of his mind. Having not paid attention for this long, it's amazingly hard to get back in step with the latest trends, performance leaders and the like. Thank you.

Still doesn't make it a good buy.

Might as well update the sub $200 3850s too.

the prices are from July 1. I dont update the prices continuously because you can just take a price you can find it at and figure out the price/performance.
also.. 329 looks like the cheapest even now on newegg.

yup its all in a spreadsheet, but still quite a bit of work to regenerate things based on new reviews if all the games changed.
typically i wouldnt regenerate all.. just the new one added in based on the recent review. However, in the last review with the new games it put ATI in a much differnet light and so I decided to regenerate all the newer cards.

The GTX 260 currently have very good performance per $

You can get GTX 260 for $229.99 and it comes with free game
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6814127361

This is cheaper than cheapest HD4870. Furthermore, the GTX 260 is very close to HD4870 in terms of performance

It is only %2.28 slower based on this review
