Sexy camera...but $50k?

ps - That was the worst review I've ever read.

If it's as good as they say then $50k is a bargain. But then you'll be spending several times that on lenses and other peripheral components before you can actually use it. Then you need the system to capture/edit that video.

There was a time not that long ago when the only DSLRs you could buy cost that much. It's at least a better use of the money than something like this.

It uses standard 2.5" Hard disc drives similar to what is found in a laptop PC.
Apparently they can be set up in a RAID configuration as well.

I followed the making of this thing from the second Jim Jannard mentioned it on the dvinfo.net forums. I even wrote two essays on it for my 'tech theory' subjects for uni. I love the damn thing, but the price breaks my heart. It was originally designed for indie filmmakers...but turns out its for 'well-off' indie filmmakers. Don't get me wrong, you're getting a 4K camera for an insanely low price, but it just ain't low enough for most indie filmmakers. I'll stick with my JVC HD-101E (which I scored for $3100AUD ex-demo)...3 x 16:9 Progressive CCD's, 1280 x 720 @ 24Progressive; it's all I need to tell my stories I guess. Hopefully the RED One will come down to well under $8K in the next 2 - 3 years.

Just noticed this from the TG Daily article:

"You have to remember that the RED One gives you the possibility to become a movie maker."

I disagree with this.

I admit the RED One is an amazing piece of engineering, but just cause it has 4K and 35mm DoF etc etc, doesn't mean it will give you the "possibility to become a movie maker". It may have 4K res and that, but that ain't gonna get you far if you don't have the story, direction, or cinematography to make a good film. I think Danny Boyle proved this with '28 Days Later'; a good film that was shot entirely on MiniDV @ 720 x 576 (and this is just one example).
