Dell 2408WFP

Fri Feb 15, 2008 11:05 am

So... the new Dell 2408WFP looks mighty interesting, been looking for a decent 24" widescreen for a while. Tried the 2407-HC but the ghosting drove me round the twist.

Anyone know of any reviews or even previews of the 2408? finding a real lack of any decent info over and above what can be found on the Dell site at the moment.

Was almost ready to order the Benq FP241W today... then I tripped over that thing, needless to say im holding off some more :D Though sadly it will likely take atleast 3 months till there are a decent number of reputable reviews out there and if there are any problems found with it (this being the norm for new Dell displays) another 3 months (minimum) untill they are fixed :(

Go go techreport, get us a 2408WFP review plz

Oh my dear god. Please tell me they fixed the goddamn ghosting and shimmering issues. I have a 2407WFP and will gladly trade it in if they have.

So wait I'm confused here. You mean to tell me it's available in Europe but not USA? Because this is all I found on the Dell USA website

I have a few questions, since I have the 2407WFP-HC.

How can you have 110% Color Gamut? I don't think I understand what "Gamut" is.

Other than some new ports on the back, is there really anything different?

Wikipedia is your friend. The gamut of a device is basically the range of colours it can produce. For example with an 24bpp image you have a range of 0-255 for each colour channel in RGB. The device has to know what colour to map to each of those values. The gamut of a device defines that.
If you read the fine print on the Dell page
2408WFP Color Gamut (Typical) is based on CIE1976 (110%) and CIE1931 (102%)
you see they advertise 102% of the sRGB (AFAIK, or could it be NTSC?) CIE1931 gamut. This means that the display can produce a broader range of colours than what is defined in the sRGB spec (what most consumer pc devices are built around). This is great for people working with larger colour spaces like Adobe RGB or ProPhoto RGB.

Do you have a Rev A1 or later? Mine was Rev A0 and it has known issues. A good example of the problem is as follows. Load up FEAR or Half Life 2. Find a place where there's sunlight shining on a wall. Move the mouse all around. The Sunlight should be a solid block of light with no edges, nice and crisp. On my 2407WFP, the boundary of the light box is always a thick gray line. If you wave the mouse around, the grey box turns into a moving grey blur which is very noticeable and annoying. The also happens in some other games with shadows like DOOM3. My friend has a 2001FP, the 20" version of my 24" monitor. other than size its the exact same monitor. It doesn't do this. neither does a 2407WFP at my workplace. That one is a Rev A2, in which this is supposed to be fixed. I called Dell to get a Rev A2 and kept getting frigging Indians who had NO idea what the hell I was talking about, and kept reading me **** out of a book that had nothing to do with my issue. SOO aggravating. The lady, who didn't speak any English and wasn't helpful, finally figured out that I just wanted a new one. She promised me that yes it would be a Rev A2 and she even "checked the box" to be sure. So of course what arrives at my door 3 weeks later? Another broken Rev A0. I probably won't buy from Dell again.

The 2001FP has an S-IPS panel. Not the same thing as your 2407WFP.

Whoops. You are correct. Well the 2407 does have issue though. Maybe some day I'll try and RMA it again when the channel is full of newer revisions.

Well, I spose the thing I want to know the most is:

Does it suffer from the inverse (dark) ghosting, common on the 2407-HC?

It is most noticable when moving light objects over mid tone backgrounds and a good example can be found HERE or HERE
I bought a 2407-HC but was forced to send it back when the dark ghosting drove me crazy.

Have been looking for the holy grail of 24" widescreens since

I'll have to look. But It sits right next to a 2001FP and looks far better then that monitor. Dual monitors FTW!!

When I got the first RMA from Dell, and opened it and tried it, and it was still broken, after being wicked pissed, I calmed down, and then I hooked both 2407's up to my X1900 just to see both at once. "Eheheheheheheh" </Peter from Family guy>

So... Any updates from people who have recieved their 2408's?
Or anyone who has stumbled onto a review?
(Preferably something from a reputable site or someone who knows what they are doing, rather than the "he said, she said", or "I plugged it in and it looks good" that seems to be so abundant these days... If one more person implies input lag is the same as panel responce time I swear I'm going to blow up the internet... honest I will find a way!!! "ZOMG my 2408 has 6ms input lag, it says so on the box"  )

Particularly interested in any ghosting and input lag problems.
If it aint broke, fix it till it is...

I have a 2407HC that's revision A0. The panel is flawless. I've tried everything from the original Quake to HL2 and all look great. Even scrolling in a web browser. I'm particularly picky about image quality, too. I had some problems with the monitor with my older Radeon 9800 Pro, but since I've upgraded those problems disappeared.

There's a long thread over at the [H]. Probably worth skipping on to about pg9-10 when people start getting the screens delivered. Seems that the ghosting issues might be resolved, but highish input lag (40-60ms) is being reported.

Anything on this review yet? Or anyone that has one or used it have any reviews or impressions on the Dell 2408WFP. How well will it work for gaming, both pc and PS3 if it was hooked up to the HDMI input? Plus watching Blue Ray movies.

Based on some "field reports" there can be enough input lag to break your gaming experience. It depends on whether you play much FPS games I suppose.

I believe sort of bottom left to top right. But it's more of a free-form blob than anything else. Certainly, TN panels are the worst and the reference models at the top right are the best. There are tradeoffs. I mean, picture quality on a TN is going to be low compared to SPVA, but GTG will often be superior.

I get that the vertical is some kind of quality, but what is horizontal?

I don't find it a very useful diagram because it doesn't really tell me anything. If I didn't know that TN panels are "bad" then I probably wouldn't understand this diagram at all.

Damning? I don't know. It fits my experience with moving from a CRT to a highly-rated LCD. I know some people say LCDs can be better, but I always attributed it to people not noticing glaring flaws.

With dismay, I learned that they indeed were—the input lag, pink tinge, washout, and over-saturated colors seemed standard fare, and I saw multiple reports of users returning one monitor and getting another one with the exact same problems. Clearly, either this display has some serious design flaws, or it has very widespread quality control issues.

Those issues are so widespread that one Dell forum moderator actually advised a user to wait for the A01 revision of the 2408WFP to come out before returning his monitor.

That sounds pretty bad to me.
