No Desktop Effects in Hardy

Thu May 22, 2008 11:20 am

OK, I'm back with more problems. I've installed Ubuntu 8.04 on a test machine at work. A Dell Optiplex GX270 with a 3.2 ghz P4 and 1.5GB of RAM. Video card is an old NVIDIA Riva TNT2 Model 64. I know its not much, but I want to enable some basic desktop effects. Not the fullblown stuff, just the basics like the desktop cube, etc. I had no problem enabling them in Fedora 8. I've installed the latest drivers straight from NVIDIA, and still get the error, "desktop effects could not be enabled."

When I try '$ compiz --replace ccp' I get

Checking for Xgl: not present.
Detected PCI ID for VGA: 01:00.0 0300: 10de:002d (rev 15) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: not present.
Trying again with indirect rendering:
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: not present.
aborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity

contents of xorg.conf are as follows:

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by failsafeDexconf, using
# values from the debconf database and some overrides to use vesa mode.
#
# You should use dexconf or another such tool for creating a "real" xorg.conf
# For example:
#   sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Are you using the Nvidia legacy drivers? I'm about certain that the default drivers don't support anything older than either GF3 or GF5.

That is what I installed. NV updated their legacy drivers at the end of January. Thats what I installed. I also tried all of the other available nvidia drivers that Ubuntu offered before getting them straight from nvidia. No luck regardless...

What method are you using compiz? Have you tried just turning on the effects in Desktop Effects setting in appearance instead.

Thats what I've been using to turn them on. I can't enable Normal or Extra. When I try, thats when I get the error "Desktop Effects could not be enabled"

From looking at your X.Org configuration file, it doesn't look like X is loading the OpenGL drivers or XGL. (Can't remember which it's supposed to load.) There should be a Load Modules section, but there isn't.

Speaking of which, did you update OpenGL to see and use the new Nvidia drivers? I forget the command for this one, but I can find it in a bit.

Edit: I found the modules section, it's at the bottom of the configuration file. Whenever I work with the file it's at the top.

I had this problem, it was related to my dual-monitor settings, and it was switchable in the dual-monitor GUI setup (I forget the name). Currently I cannot run Ubuntu since I have the older version without support for the 9600 card, so I couldn't tell you right now what the setting is that fixed it. It is something non-obvious.

It looks like the solution for some was to install xserver-xgl. Have you tried doing that?

Somebody, somewhere suggested enabling DRI. Try adding Load "DRI" to the modules section of your xorg.conf.

Also, try running:
sudo nvidia-xconfig --add-argb-glx-visuals -d 24

I've done some poking around. It looks like people who haven't installed the drivers from the Restricted Drivers Manager had been unable to get it working. I think anyway.

Try following the steps from this page:

He's already using the nvidia-glx-legacy drivers. Based on his xorg.conf and glxinfo output, the Nvidia binary drivers are working and GL is using direct accelerated rendering.

Since his card is really old (TNT2), he has to use the legacy (7xxx) nvidia drivers which don't support GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap. That means he'll have to use Xgl to get desktop effects. zer0, you said you tried installing the Xgl X server, but what output do you get from compiz --replace ... after you installed Xgl and did a full restart of X (by killing it or changing runlevels, etc.)?

Well then, wouldn't zer0 need to add this to his xorg.conf:

        Option  "Composite" "Disable"
EndSection

It may be that the version of compiz bundled with Ubuntu 8.04 is a bit pickier about what it'll run on than the one bundled with Fedora 8. Compiz is still pretty new, and the code base is subject to a fair bit of churn.

Expecting any sort of eye candy on a TNT2 is a bit much, IMO...

I'm not sure what exactly a TNT2 supports but I got compiz-fusion running on a ATI mobility 7500. The only thing that doesn't work is the water effects, and there is a good chance that was user error. I did have to modify the whitelist file to install it though.

I'm not sure exactly what a TNT2 can reasonably support either, but the TNT2 line pre-dates the Radeon 7xxx series by several years (it's from 1999). That could be offset by the fact that the TNT2 was a desktop part though.
